An amazing story of Wenatchee gold mining...and not that long ago!
Our speaker this week is Diane Groody. She is a geologist, who was one of the 2 Asamera geologists on the original exploration crews that came to the Wenatchee to look for gold in 1981...and guess what, they found some! In fact, quite a lot as you will hear.
Diane supervised the drilling, sampling, and mapping of the Cannon Mine. She gave input on ground and grade control plus calculated the reserves and royalty payments at the underground mine at the south end of Miller Street until 1989. She was the first and only woman mine geologist in the USA at that time.

Program Last Week - "Drafting program at Wenatchee Valley College"
The speaker was introduced by his sponsor from the program committee, Britt Dudek. He went into some detail regarding the WVC 1-year drafting certificate program, which has been designed to prepare students for employment as drafting techs for architects, construction companies, contractors, utility and engineering firms. Students will take coursework in AutoCAD, blueprint reading, GIS, survey, math, Excel spreadsheets, and English composition. Arius Elvikis has been teaching computer graphics at Wenatchee Valley College for a decade, including the Adobe design suite, AutoCAD, and SOLIDWORKS.
He coordinates the Graphic Design 2-year degree as well as the newly expanded Drafting certification. Arius earned his BFA at Bradley University in Peoria IL and his MFA from Arizona State University, where he explored merging fine art sensibilities with 3D printing and laser scanning.
President-Elect Michelle Shermer co-presided with President Jill Leonard, who was present on ZOOM.

CAMP OUT (by Tom Ross). Last year we had the first annual Wenatchee Rotary campout at the Wenatchee River County Park. It turned out to be great fun and fellowship. We had seven couples camping and about 25 people for camp dinner and a big campfire on the Saturday night. Some of us went on a nice hike together.
We are choosing Wenatchee Confluence State Park for June 2023. Our dates are June 9th and 10th with the camp dinner on the 10th. To get spots we need to make reservations as soon as the state allows which is seven months in advance. This park will fill up fast. I can’t make a group reservation, so this takes coordination and participation so that we get reservations and with at least a few sites neighboring each other (party central). The potluck including non-campers will be Saturday afternoon / evening.
Here is the plan:
I am going to start a group email including last year's campers as well as others interested. Let me know ASAP to be included in the email.
Next Friday, September 9th as early as 7:00 AM, get on the state park website and make your reservation for Friday June 9th and/or Saturday June 10th.
“Reply All” to the email and let us know where you are located so everyone can see who is reserved where.
Reservations can be cancelled the day prior to camping so don’t hesitate to reserve if you are unsure.
Again, we are reserving at Confluence State Park. Dates are June 9-11, 2023.
Sponsored by the Wenatchee Valley Musuem and Cultural Center.

Four area Clubs contributed to the grant which was matched by Rotary International through the District grant process. The Clubs are East Wenatchee, Wenatchee, Wenatchee Confluence and Wenatchee Sunrise. The total grant amount is $17,106, with half from the four Clubs and half from the district grant. The Sunrise Club is the lead on the grant.
The Coyote Corner is a location on the second floor in the Museum designed for children under 6 and their caregivers and family members. The area provides experiential, full-body experiences that engage children in understanding how rivers and our natural environment can be a reliable source of clean energy, produce jobs, and contribute to the beauty of our area. The space encourages children to play and engage themselves in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) based activities where they begin to build a science identity that will be foundational to becoming adults with a high science IQ.
The construction part of the project is complete and included a redesign of stairs that allow access to an upper level play area, the removal of a closet to provide more space, work on the floor surface, and painting. The cost for this work was $11,420 and we expect to receive an invoice soon.
The remaining work involves ceiling and wall murals by local artist, Lindsey Breidenthal. That work will be done by early next year and is estimated at $4300. Any remaining funds will be used to purchase educational play equipment for the space.
FINES. Former member and guest Sue Rose has been invited to join a Rotary club near her new home. Ford Barrett bragged that he just got his last grandchild "married off". Allan Galbraith fined Judy Conner for offending attorneys at a previous meeting.
