RYLA

Written by Nick Winters. Posted in RYLA

Wenatchee Downtown Rotary Club is part of District 5060. The club usually makes two awards to deserving students. RYLA is always on Memorial Day Weekend at Naramata Centre in British Columbia.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES FOR THE PARTICIPANTS

1. To explore and apply practical leadership skills.

2. To know themselves better.

3. To learn and develop teaming skills.

4. To develop and practice communication skills.

5. To have a fun time with fellow young adults.

WHAT IS RYLA?

RYLA stands for "Rotary Youth Leadership Awards". Throughout the Rotary world, most Districts run RYLA programs. In District 5060, "RYLA" means three days of intensive leadership training and development for selected young adults. Clubs carefully choose a young person (or persons) who show(s) leadership potential and who will benefit from attendance at RYLA.

The majority of Rotary programs are designed to help the underprivileged or the community at large. RYLA is a little different. The thrust of RYLA is to help young adults who already show they have leadership abilities to develop their skills and enhance their knowledge in a challenging environment. RYLA is Rotary's contribution to the development of the next generation of leaders in society.

We like to focus on the word "Award". Clubs award to deserving young persons this once in a lifetime learning and training experience. They do so by paying the registration fee for their selected attendee(s).

WHAT IS THE AGE RANGE FOR PARTICIPANTS?

For District 5060, the age range has been set at 19 through 24. Applicants must be at least 19 and no older than 24 on the day RYLA starts.

In some parts of the world, RYLA participants can be as young as 14. In others they can be as old as 30. The 19 through 24 range seems to work best for us because everyone can be treated as an adult (and is considered so in law), and the age/maturity spread is sufficiently narrow so that everyone can work well together.

WHERE WILL RYLA TAKE PLACE?

RYLA is located at the Naramata Centre, Naramata B.C. Naramata is on the East side of Okanagan Lake, about twenty minutes drive from Pentictonwww.naramatacentre.net

WHY IS RYLA LOCATED IN NARAMATA?

The Naramata Centre offers a quiet, retreat type of setting, somewhat distant from the distractions of the City. The food is excellent, the accommodations are comfortable and clean, and the cost is very reasonable. Naramata is close to the geographical centre of the District, so everyone can easily drive there in a day.

WHAT WILL RYLA COST?

The high calibre workshop leaders and speakers are all District 5060 Rotarians, volunteering their time, energy and skills for the benefit of the next generation of leaders. To attend a training session of this quality normally would cost thousands of dollars. Fees are paid by the sponsoring club.

WHAT WILL THE ATTENDANCE FEE COVER?

All meals from supper on Thursday evening through lunch on Sunday, shared accommodation on site, and all administrative and on site conference related expenses. Gas money to drive to Naramata is also provided. Carpooling with other RYLA U.S. participants is encouraged and facilitated.

WHAT WILL THE PROGRAM BE LIKE?

Attendees can expect an intense, high-energy experience which blends learning, leadership skill development, team building exercises and fun competitive events.

WHAT ARE THE RULES?
Attendees are expected to remain within Naramata from the time they arrive on Thursday until they leave on Sunday. No alcohol, no drugs.

Attendees are asked to arrive with a positive attitude, ready to learn and to have fun, and with a willingness to help make RYLA 2009 an outstanding success.

WHAT IS THE ATTENDANCE LIMIT FOR RYLA?

The attendance limit is 50 persons. Applications
