Since 2016, Rotarians have helped plant native nursery-grown seedlings in the Wenatchee Foothills as part of an intergenerational event organized by the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust, where an adult with 1-2 students, typically members of the WHS Interact Club, but also students attending Wenatchee Valley College improve the area around the “Kenzie’s Landing Trailhead” in the Broadview neighborhood.  This year’s project is planting 200 sagebrush and 200 bitterbrush seedlings which will become hiding cover and food for wintering mule deer, which the State of Washington and Chelan County recognize as a species of special importance, generally, but specifically in the foothills behind Wenatchee. The site is a hidden hillside accessed by hiking off-trail for 15 minutes.

The Project should last 2-3 hours from 9:00 on November 11. The work will occur whether rain or shine.

The improvements to and around the Kenzie’s Landing Trailhead has been a four-year project of the WHS Interact Club, which has, besides actual planting, between Dec. 2018 and May 2022, raised over $22,000 for the improvements. A large part of this fund-raising was the Club’s gift of nearly $10,000. Five Thousand Dollars was used to grow native plants to go around the new trailhead. Several Interact Club members are now seniors and will get to the see the results of their hard work and fundraising. This is an amazing project for high schoolers and the CDLT will celebrate and publicize later this year. City of Wenatchee Parks Dept. Director, Dave Erikson said “The years- long commitment and dedication by the Wenatchee High School Interact Club to the Kenzie’s Landing Project both by helping raise the funds needed to construct the project and also replant the natural area is greatly appreciated and will leave a lasting legacy for all those who visit in the years to come.”

Kenzie’s Landing refers to Mackenzie Clennon, the daughter of Bart and Shelia Clennon. Bart Clennon was a member of the Club for several years.
