MARCH IS ROTARY'S CLEAN WATER & SANITATION MONTH

PROGRAM THIS WEEK
Voluntary Stewardship Program
With Mike Kaputa

The Voluntary Stewardship Program (VSP) is an optional, incentive-based approach to protecting critical areas while promoting agriculture. The VSP is allowed under the Growth Management Act as an alternative to traditional approaches to critical areas protection, such as “no touch” buffers. Twenty eight counties have “opted in” to the VSP by nominating one or more watersheds in their county where the program would apply. Chelan County received funding to develop a VSP work plan from the Washington State Conservation Commission and the Technical Panel adopted the plan in April 2017.

Program of March 23, 2023: HANWASH
With Carin Smith

HANWASH is the acronym for The Haiti National Clean Water, Sanitation & Hygiene Strategy, the Haitian effort to begin the serious work of bringing sustainable clean drinking water to Haiti.  Carin Smith is chair of our International Service Committee and has led this effort for District 5060, along with PDG Sherry Chamberlain.  The current effort is part of a 5-year pilot project to lay the groundwork for the ultimate goal.  View the official website HERE.
She gave an informative update on the latest information and welcomed any member to join her on the committee.
For Carin's complete commentary, watch the ZOOM video here.   View Carin's complete PowerPoint here, but a few of her images are shown below.

Carin expressed appreciation to the club for supporting the project, which has been an ongoing effort for at least 3 years and has been very gratifying for her.  She first explained the geography of the project and that the location was selected in large part because of the active Rotary club at Cap-Haitien (as required to meet criteria for a Rotary Global Grant).  It is located in the town of Artaud, in the region of Ferrier (about 40 miles east of Milot, the site of our earlier water project.  Plans call for a future expansion of the system north to the towns on the coast, about 5 miles.

Much of Carin's enjoyment has come from getting to know the people, through regular ZOOM meetings with the Haitian team.  Much of the work has been devoted to documenting every detail of the project for the benefit of future follow-on projects, toward the objective of bringing piped clean water to all of Haiti.  Requirements for a Rotary Global Grant are extremely stringent, so Carin is proud that she played a key role in achieving one of the largest such grants in the history of District 5060 - $490,000.  Carin mentioned the Global
Grant for Rotary International.   To see how RI uses contributions to the RI foundation for grants, watch this video.

Applications from Kris KruseHeavan Henderson and Jaana Hatton have been approved by the board.  Kris is a realter colleague of Jamie Quinteros at Coldwell Banker Cascade.  Heavan is employed by Campfire as summer camp director.  Jaana is a freelance writer.  They will become members after two Appleseed listings if there are no objections.  Members may give feedback here.

PAUL HARRIS FELLOW.  Bryan Campbell received his recognition as PHF+2, as presented by Foundation Chair, Frank Clifton.
Frank shared that 12 members have become first-time or multiple Paul Harris Fellows this Rotary year.  That support has helped the club exceed the goal of $4,000 by 100%. The club now has a total of 52 active PHF members, 29 multiple PHF members, and 8 benefactors.  Your support of the Rotary International Foundation is the main source for Rotary to make an impact in the world through Global and District grants.

Frank reminded the club that there are still incentives in place for earning bonus points toward PHF.  For info, click the link on our home page under the photo of PHF members (also found here).

The Miss Veedol hangar at Pangborn Memorial Airport in East Wenatchee recently received in 2009, being renamed "East Wenatchee Rotary Hangar".  The update came about as a joint effort between the Spirit of Wenatchee group and East Wenatchee Rotary, with the help of a Public Image grant from Rotary District 5060.

The Miss Veedol was the first airplane to complete a nonstop flight across the Pacific Ocean, taking off at Misawa, Japan and crash landing at Fancher Field in East Wenatchee on October 5, 1931.  Co-pilots Clyde Pangborn and Hugh Herndon were unharmed in the landing.

A group of local flight enthusiasts, the Spirit of Wenatchee, undertook the challenge of building a replica aircraft, which was completed in 2003 and was flown that year to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers' first flight.  The Miss Veedol has flown all over the country to participate in air shows and other special events and is regularly seen flying over the Wenatchee Valley.

Shortly after completion of the plane in 2003, the Rotary Club of East Wenatchee, which had several members who were active in the Spirit of Wenatchee group at the time, purchased the hangar where the plane has been stored ever since.  In normal times, more than 60,000 incoming visitors to our valley drive right past the hangar as they exit the airport. This signage has been updated with the Rotary Wheel.
