Program of March 09, 2023:
Douglas County PUD Hydrogen Project
Gary Ivory, General Manager, introduced by Britt Dudek

Douglas PUD 0perates the Wells Hydroelectric dam near Pateros and has always been an innovator in the utility industry.  Why hydrogen?

As the state looks toward low and zero emission technologies, our customer-owners want their local PUD to be prepared for the future.  The 5MW pilot project will provide flexibility to Douglas PUD operations at their Wells Hydroelectric Project.  This project has been in the works for several years with the first hurdle cleared with the passage of SB 5588 in 2019 authorizing PUD’s to produce and sell renewable hydrogen (sponsored by Senator Hawkins and a $250,000 planning grant sponsored by Representative Steele).

Hydrogen is created by a process that separates the hydrogen and oxygen molecules in water through electrolysis, using a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM), converting electrons into molecules.  The gas is then compressed to about 500 atmospheres (about 7,000 psi).  The process is energy intensive with about 80% of the input costs being electricity.  This helps balance the power load on generators, by using excess power when available.  Because renewable energy is used, "Green hydrogen" is generated.

Construction has begun, with production of renewable hydrogen starting late 2024.  Douglas PUD is the only US utility doing this and it has generated much national attention.  For more information, watch the ZOOM video recording, and the videos shown the PUD website here - Hydrogen Project.

This week's News and Announcements.

IMAGINE ROTARY MOMENTS.   As Rotarians, we don’t strive to make an impact for the accolades.  But sometimes it is just nice to have someone say Thank you!  Thank you to everyone who plays a part in making an impact.  You might consider it a small act, but together we make a tidal wave of difference.   I am so proud to be a Rotarian and so proud to be one with all of you!  This video says it well.

PAUL HARRIS FELLOW. Susan Albert recognized past-member Norma Gallegos as a new Paul Harris Fellow, describing Norma as the 'embodiment of giving to the community'.  Norma serves as program director for Hand in Hand Immigration Services, which offers citizenship and civic education classes.
Norma recently received the Cornerstone Award with the Wenatchee Valley Chamber of Commerce.  She was one of 5 nominees for the Wenatchee Valley Uplift Award with the Wenatchee Valley Museum and Cultural Center.
She was a member of this club from 2010 through 2017.
The Wenatchee World has written many stories about Norma and/or her work - here is one.

Since the 1940s, welcome signs at the north end of the city have signified this area as the world’s apple capital. Wenatchee's "Apple Capital of the World" sign is illuminated for the first time on Sept. 16, 1959.  The neon sign, located near the Columbia River Bridge, was presented to the city by the Wenatchee Board of Realtors. In 1963, the Wenatchee Rotary raised $200 for the illuminated sign.  The current sign, erected in 1980 by Terry Signs, was removed in the fall of 2006 because it was in disrepair.  The city solicited replacement sign proposals, and invited citizens of Wenatchee to participate and vote on the design of the new Apple Capital of the World sign.  Alcoa generously donated $30,000 to manufacture a new sign.  In 2007, Mayor Dennis Johnson and the Wenatchee City Council selected Graybeal Signs to create the new signage that continues to welcome travelers to the city that well deserves the distinction of being the “Apple Capital of the World”.
