RECENT SAD LOSSES

It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of former Rotarians and a spouse.
Rocky Skalisky.   Rocky and spouse, Katrina Borth,  were active members of our Rotary club for several years. Rocky always had a smile on his face and a warm story to tell. He will be missed.  He passed away on Saturday.

Gerald (Jerry) Copp.  Jerry joined the club in September of 1991, and became an honorary member in January 2018 due to failing health.....
A memorial service was held on Saturday.

Gary Mertes died on 9/18 as reported by Bud Truswell, who was a business partner. Gary joined 4/01/70, left on 12/31/03, and served many years as treasurer.

Karen Russell passed away 9/21.  She was wife of PP Jim Russell.  See more below with a link to her Caring Bridge site.

Go here for a list of other deceased members, with many obituaries.

    WEEK IN REVIEW SEPTEMBER 19
     WENATCHEE ROTARY FOUNDATION (WRF)
with Tom Ross and others

The meeting was opened by Past President Judy Conner, who gave or allowed the announcements below, then introduced Tom Ross, WRF VP.    Tom explained the purpose, and operation of the Wenatchee Rotary Foundation (WRF) whose mission is to improve educational opportunities for citizens living in the greater Wenatchee area.   Funding is through immediate and deferred giving from current and past club members.  Each club member in good standing id also a member of WRF.
Officers:   President, Jay Smith;  VP, Tom Ross, Treasurer, Tyler Mickey;  Secretary, Bill Monnette.  Committee Chairs :
Scholarship - Joe St. Jean;    Fundraising - Susan Albert;     Events - Jill Leonard.
Board Members:   Paul Pankey, Alice Meyer.  Pres. Elect (ex officio)  TRF Chair: Dan Rodgers

Paul Scea was a generous member of this club, and the WRF was named for him as explained by Ford Barrett, especially estate planning.  The Paul Scea Award is presented to those donating $500 to the fund.  Susan Albert named the new Paul Scea Fellows:  Members Jill Leonard, Mark McCants, Bob Rowe, Laurel Turner (& Rory), Gary Provo, Bryan Campbell, and Alice Meyer; also non-members Mabel & Patrick Bodell, Mall Boyd, Kristin Ferrera, Nancy Walker Penrose, Jorge and Maria Rojas Villamil, and Dennis and Sharon Johnson. Those present are pictured below.
Multiple Paul Scea Fellows were:  Bart and Sheila Clennon, Kory Kalahar, Jim McDonald, Sue Rose, Jay Smith, Joe St. Jean, Marcia Henkle, Carmen Bossenbrock, David Gellatly, Mike Kintner, Tyler Mickey, Susan Albert, Don & Heidi Myers, Paul Pankey, Scott Ballard, Bill Murray, Beth & Dennis Dobbs, Alicia Nakata, Terry Stuller, Nathan Bishop, Tom Ross, and Gil Sparks.
Auction Kickoff.   Co-Chair Bill Murray squeezed his 10-minute talk down to 1 minute.   Historically, 33% of members do the bulk of the work; 33% do something; and 33% were unable to contribute to our fundraisers. I am asking more of you this year: I am asking 50% of you to be significantly involved and the remaining 50% to do something. I want 100% participation at your best effort for you at his time! We still need dozens of Rotarians to say yes for committee work and every Rotarian to donate treasure, time, or auction items this year. I am starting out the 2020 Campaign with a donation of $1,000. I am asking each one of you to help our club reach the goal of $120,000. Today is the beginning of our 2020 Auction, AND it is International Talk Like a Pirate Day. So, when Barbara Walters (co-chair) or I, or another Auction Committee member calls and asks for your help, please respond "Arrg…Aye Cap’n!",  and let’s have fun and generate lots of money for our community. More information every week in our newsletter and at every meeting. Thank you in advance for your efforts!

Just so ‘ya know…#21 - Community Outreach

Our Rotary support of the 2nd Harvest Food Distribution this year has been wonderful.  This past Wednesday nine  of your fellow Rotarians helped hand
out over 10,000 pounds of food to over 300 local families.  These households add up to approximately 1,014 people who were aided in their basis needs.
Joining other area Rotarians and Trivent, a local Lutheran group, were the following Wenatchee Rotarians:  Gene Anderson, Chuck Jinneman, Terry Stuller, Dick Reed, Alice Meyer, Bryan Campbell, Carin Smith, Gary Provo, and Joe St.Jean.

As we think of what good we can do with our Auction 2020 funds, remember how important our community outreach support has been for the 2nd Harvest Food Distribution Program.  Whenever Rotarians can support both financially and physically to worthwhile programs, it is a “win – win” for all of us.
Yours in Rotary,
Joe St.Jean

REPEATING BIG NEWS!

An incredibly generous grant of $26,000 is being made to the Wenatchee Rotary Club specifically for the Polio Plus campaign.  The benefactors, who are beloved members of our Rotary family, have requested that these funds be leveraged by all clubs in District 5060 to spur individual Rotarians to consider their individual contributions for this worthy cause.  To the benefactors we say- “Well Done- And Thank You!”.  For our club members, please consider your individual contributions to RI. It would be great to honor this generous gift by matching it with individual contributions.

EVEN BIGGER NEWS!  The same benefactors are also making substantial grants to District 5060 and to RI for a Guatemalan literacy program.  These are remarkable acts of generosity that will impact the world.

This proves that once again- It’s a Great Day to be a Rotarian!

Karen Russell has passed away.  Find out more on her personal Caring Bridge page.
PP Jim (2016-17) is an Honorary member.  Karen is has decided it's time for hospice.

SPEAKERS.   Are you thinking of sponsoring a speaker?  Guidelines are posted on our website under the main menu.  Or click here.

End Polio Now/Club 60:      Our goal this year is $7500, in spite of the secretary's erroneous report of no goal.  On September 12, Club-60-cup donations were $32.96 bringing our total to $328  or $984 with the Gates match!   This equates to 1643 lives potentially saved!  Plan now to participate in all our activities on World Polio Day, October 24.
Goal is $7500 for Rotary year

Note:  We continue our 10-year relationship with the Gates Foundation.  Since 2013, they have matched each dollar with $2 toward polio eradication.
