RECENT SAD LOSSES

It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of former Rotarians and a spouse.
Rocky Skalisky.   Rocky and spouse, Katrina Borth,  were active members of our Rotary club for several years. Rocky always had a smile on his face and a warm story to tell. He will be missed.  He passed away on Saturday.

Gerald (Jerry) Copp.  Jerry joined the club in September of 1991, and became an honorary member in January 2018 due to failing health.....
A memorial service was held on Saturday.

Gary Mertes died on 9/18 as reported by Bud Truswell, who was a business partner. Gary joined 4/01/70, left on 12/31/03, and served many years as treasurer.

Karen Russell passed away 9/21.  She was not a member, but wonderful wife of PP Jim Russell.  See more below with a link to her Caring Bridge site.

     UPCOMING PROGRAMS

OCTOBER 03 - Garden Terrace Low Income Housing
With Ken Neher  (Facebook page)

Garden Terrace Low Income Senior Living is one of Wenatchee’s best kept secrets.  It has been providing safe and dignified housing for some of the Valley’s lowest income senior citizens since 1971.  A Section 8 HUD Housing project, Garden Terrace has 146 apartments.  It strives to provide more than a place to live; it provides a community for some of our most vulnerable seniors.  Garden Terrace is a charitable non-profit organization that is owned by a community-based board of directors and managed by a project Administrator and a dedicated staff.
Ken Neher has managed Garden Terrace for the past 5 years.  He has a remarkable and varied background including owning and managing multiple local Burger King Restaurants and serving as a senior fundraising specialist for the Church of the Brethren General Brotherhood.  Ken is a high level tennis player and bike rider.  Under his leadership, Garden Terrace completed a $2 million upgrade to the aging facility.

    OCTOBER 10 - GWATA

    WEEK IN REVIEW SEPTEMBER 26
     LT. GOVERNOR CYRUS HABIB

The meeting was opened by President Mike Kintner, who gave or allowed the announcements below, before introducing Russ Speidel who introduced our speaker Lieutenant Governor Cyrus Habib.
Listen here to the program.   Russ explained some interesting facts about Mr. Habib, such as that he is a 3-time cancer survivor, fully blind since age 8, a Yale Rhodes scholar, and the first Iranian-American to hold an elected state government office in US history.  He also has a background in Rotary.
In a likable humorous style, he reviewed his background, then advocated for kids who might feel excluded as he did.  In a non-partisan fashion, he addressed the issue and the importance of college versus learning a physical trade. He also addressed the costs of education.   He talked about culture and international trade and relationships.
He expressed great appreciation for what Rotary does especially in scholarships, and international exchange.

Thanks to Ashley Gillum for most recent meeting photos.

REPEATING BIG NEWS!

An incredibly generous grant of $26,000 is being made to the Wenatchee Rotary Club specifically for the Polio Plus campaign.  The benefactors, who are beloved members of our Rotary family, have requested that these funds be leveraged by all clubs in District 5060 to spur individual Rotarians to consider their individual contributions for this worthy cause.  To the benefactors we say- “Well Done- And Thank You!”.  For our club members, please consider your individual contributions to RI. It would be great to honor this generous gift by matching it with individual contributions.

EVEN BIGGER NEWS!  The same benefactors are also making substantial grants to District 5060 and to RI for a Guatemalan literacy program.  These are remarkable acts of generosity that will impact the world.  The generous donors will soon be revealed!

This proves that once again- It’s a Great Day to be a Rotarian!

Karen Russell has passed away.  Find out more on her personal Caring Bridge page.
PP Jim (2016-17) is an Honorary member.  This is the final report.

SPEAKERS.   Are you thinking of sponsoring a speaker?  Guidelines are posted on our website under the main menu.  Or click here.

End Polio Now/Club 60:      Our goal this year is $7500.  On September 19 & 26, Club-60-cup donations totaled  $74.17 bringing our total to $402  or $1206 with the Gates match!   This equates to 2007 lives potentially saved!  Plan now to participate in all our activities on World Polio Day, October 24.
Goal is $7500 for Rotary year

Note:  We continue our 10-year relationship with the Gates Foundation.  Since 2013, they have matched each dollar with $2 toward polio eradication.
