    WEEK IN REVIEW -  Feb. 25, 2021 (ZOOM #45)
Part 1 -  Program -  PARQUE PADRINOS with Teresa Benditos
See ZOOM video HERE .  [password = #30february25Bendito ]
NOTES:
  1. ZOOM videos are only available for 2-3 weeks.
  2. Permanent alternate (YouTube) video HERE.
  3. Previous APPLESEED (Feb. 25), contains speaker's bio.
  4. View some of Teresa's PowerPoint slides below with park photos.
  5. Recent news story about Teresa- 9/24/19 Wenatchee World, Rufus Woods

Teresa Bendito is a community organizer and co‐founder of Parque Padrinos (godparents of the park), a grassroots commun ity organization that leads park advocacy, relationship building, and culturally relevant outdoor experiences in South Wenatchee.  The organization is mostly women & youth led.  She was introduced by Carin Smith.  Her images are displayed below.

Teresa related the process of the upgrades to the Methow Community Kiwanis Park, a major project which began in 2015.  She began by thanking all those who participated and related a little of her background, how she was born and raised in Wenatchee after her parents came here 25 years ago to perform agricultural work.  She graduated recently from Wenatchee Valley College, and is bi-lingual.

She explained the benefits of having the community participate in the designing the park's key features, and shared about a stewardship group that formed to further program and care for the space. She emphasized the importance of having a nice place for kids to play, when most of them live in multi family housing with no outdoor space. Teresa encourages all of us to visit this beautiful park that now has wifi available. Also, see the story of how the community responded during the COVID pandemic  - Trust for Public Land.

  WEEK IN REVIEW PART 2

ANNOUNCEMENTS AND NEWS

See previous editions of the Appleseed for other important notes
The meeting was opened and led by president Kory Kalahar, as he welcomed all members and guests.
Announcements.
  • Hybrid meeting survey.  If you missed it in the last Appleseed, you can complete the survey HERE.   Our major priority is to provide options for folks who want to meet and those who prefer to stay home. In addition, we want to give a quality program to both those remote and in person and that takes a special venue to uphold. Armed with your feedback, the board will continue to discuss this.
  • Rotary Moment.  Club historian Marc Heminger gave a brief overview of activities in year 1941-42.  Read more HERE in the Appleseed of June 13, 2019.    Watch the video HERE, including Kory's final thoughts, below.
  • Girl Scout cookies.    Contact Jill Leonard HERE.
  • Rotary Grants AvailableJoe St. Jean reminded the club of his announcement last week about community grants.  For all related information, click on the GRANTS tab on our club home page.
  • Final thoughts.  Not so Stupid Things that Kory has done! Marrying Young - Emma! Mackenzie is my youngest daughter at age 21. She will be 22 on St. Patty’s day next month. She is currently student teaching at Newbery elementary in a Kindergarten class and loves it very much. She plans to enroll in a Master’s program for the fall and substitute teach until she completes her coursework. She has been home for eleven months now after Central WU shut down its campus in March 2020. We love her being home with her puppy Winnie and her cat Rolly!

IMPORTANT DISTRICT TRAINING.   Excellent no-cost Rotary training opportunities are upcoming on ZOOM, especially for new members (but all Rotarians can benefit). View the list and register HERE.
   UPCOMING PROGRAMS

MARCH 04 -  LANDSCAPES & WILDFIRES
      With Paul Hessburg

Paul Hessburg is a research ecologist who builds models of historical and modern era conditions in large forests and studies what factors make them behave as they do. In fact, much of his research is trying to decipher what is normal. In his research, Hessburg wants to know how the forests we inherited worked before we changed them. What did "natural" look like, and what specifically did we change about naturalness? What's still working well, and what could use a hand down?

Hessburg has spent most of his adult life (35 years) in his dream job. He works for the USDA, Forest Service, at the Pacific Northwest Research Station, where he is stationed at a field laboratory in Wenatchee, WA, US. That's located about five blocks just east of heaven, he says. He has a doctorate in Forest Pathology from Oregon State University, and he has been working in forestry for 40 years. He's also an Affiliate Professor at the University of Washington, Seattle, USA.

In 2017, Hessburg was awarded his Research Station's Distinguished Scientist Award, and he will be awarded his Agencies' Distinguished Scientist Award for 2017, in February of 2018.   View his 'TED' Talk HERE.

MARCH 11 -  WASHINGTON BUSINESS &
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
      With Karen Francis-McWhite
Karen Francis-McWhite is an advocate for rural community and economic development, working with the Washington State Department of Commerce as the Central Washington Community Engagement and Outreach Specialist. She has lived in and been an advocate for Central Washington residents and communities for eight of the last thirteen years, and has worked for the Department of Commerce since November 2019.

Karen joins us to share Commerce’s mission and work, and to learn how our communities and organizations would like to partner with Commerce to strengthen our communities.
