WEEK IN REVIEW, Dec. 06 - The Auction

President Pete opened the Grizzly Lounge meeting with the sad news that our beloved Carmen Bossenbrock is back in the hospital because her leg broke again;  there will be more on that later.  He also made mention of some other familiar names who are in need of our prayers, and recognized several members for some very important announcements, all outlined below.
Auction co-chair Jill Leonard then assumed control of the meeting to discuss the importance and needs of our January Auction:  "Building Communities".  She began by praising the committee of 12 for their hard work on this event which has a goal to raise $115,000, most of which will be used for:
  • Lincoln Park BMX Track and 2nd Picnic Shelter
  • Wenatchee Rotary Foundation (Scholarship Fund)
  • Rotary Park
  • Interact Club Service Project
  • Community Service Committee Grants; past projects include Library, Westside HS, Pybus Foundation, and Chelan County K9 unit
She explained how to access our new auction on-line program, to donate, sponsor, or buy tickets.  See all of the updated details and links on our website.  Jill then called up several members to speak briefly about different aspects of the club's current and past giving to different projects and causes.  Listen to Jill.
Marc Heminger gave a historical overview of our past giving, since 1921.  Credit was given to John McDarment (former member and club secretary) for his invaluable input.
Joe St. Jean shared about the formation of the Community Outreach Grants Committee in 2016, having the goal "To do the most good for the most people", spending about $40K on scholarships, beautification, housing and more.   Listen to Joe.
Rich Peters  Spoke about our park projects.  Listen to Rich.
Gary Provo closed out with some general info; he handed out a list of procurement ideas suggested more can be obtained from the 2017 auction program, posted on-line.... Auction pages 2017
Co-chair Jay Smith announced that he has storage space for donated auction items at his office, 411 N. Chelan.

Bill Murray introduced Artist Tammy Wilson owns Rocks By Design and creates Custom Painted Rocks for memorials, inspiration , sports teams, and other events, by request 509-470-5029   or  tamtamsluv@gmail.com.   Bill saw some of her work in a jewelry store and called her and asked to see more.  That led to a discussion about donating a piece of work for our Auction! That then led to an exhibit at our Rotary club meeting December 6. Tammy will return on the 20th to show and sell her art to those interested.  Members voted on their favorite from her collection, and it was donated to the auction.

       ANNOUNCEMENTS

President Pete presided in the Grizzly Lounge, and first asked for a moment of silence in memory of the passing of president Bush (41) and also for that great generation who fought for us in WWII, noting that tomorrow is Pearl Harbor Day.
He also gave a chaplain's report which consisted of some bad news about Carmen Bossenbrock and others and asked for prayers.
1.  Carmen's leg has re-broken, putting her back in Central Washington Hospital.  See more below.*
2.  Jim Brink is taking some time away because his son Jerry is having surgery for a brain tumor.
3.  Former member Fredi Simpson is hospitalized in Seattle with a serious health issue. She left the club in 2009.

Susan Albert announced Interact Club's Habitat house is now occupied and they are beginning a new project.
They are partnering with Chelan-Douglas Land Trust, with a goal of $35K.   Susan is donating a matching gift of $250, and requested donations from the members.  Click here to see the list of 5 initiatives, valued at $1K to $15K.
Those who failed to make their promised donation may pay up on Thursday!  smiley

Dan Maher announced a YWCA "Home for the Holidays" Lunch and reception"  Wednesday 12/12 at noon and at 5;30 PM.   READ MORE
Sue Rose repeated her invitation to a special Fellowship event, another Old Time Radio Show at the Numerica PAC, 12/21, 7:30 PM.  It is titled "Ms Bob Cratchit's Wild Christmas Binge".  Tickets are $12.  READ MORE
Don Myers gave details about the next two meetings, the annual Christmas Party (12/13) and the Annual Meeting (12/20); details appear elsewhere in this issue.
President Pete confessed neglecting to sing Happy Birthday to those celebrating in September-November; we sang.
He also praised the bell-ringers of last week, and mentioned the Appleseed trivia winners, Tom Arnold and Allan Galbraith, neither of whom were present.  His good news was that the Christmas party at his home next Thursday night is still on, despite the fact the contractor failed to complete the new counter-tops; as in The Grinch, they still came.
Bill Murray introduced Artist Tammy Wilson who owns Rocks By Design.  See story and photo above.

*  Carmen's femur bone shattered again after the first repair and many months of recuperation at Regency nursing home.  She had surgery last Friday to repair her re-broken leg.  This time the repair was more permanent, by inserting an artificial replacement  bone (partial or total femoral replacement, TFR), a type of arthroplasty.  This technique allows almost immediate fixation.  Within 3 days she was able to put weight on it, and will be moved back to Regency on Tuesday.  She is reportedly feeling well but very tired.

Elections for President for the 2022-23 term and for Board of Directors for the 2019-22 term will be held at our Thursday meeting December 20th.  Below are a listing of the nominees for these positions; please read and consider in preparation for voting on 12/20

President Designate – Alice Meyer and Susan Albert
[NOTE:  One of these will follow Kory Kalahar, who follows Mike Kintner, who follows Pres. Pete]

Susan Albert has been a member of Wenatchee Rotary twice:  from 2001 to 2005, when she moved her membership to the Cupertino club, and then again here from 2015 to present.  She oversees our Interact Club, serves on our board and foundation board and on the Community Grant Committee, and has recently become the Interact Chair for our district.

Alice Meyer has been an active Rotary member since March 2013 and has served on the Westside, social, auction and membership committees.  She was a board member from July 2015 – June 2018.  Currently she is co-chairing the program committee with Loren Stach and is a board member on the Wenatchee Rotary Foundation.

Board of Directors:  Dante Gutierrez-Zamora, Michelle Shermer, Dan Maher, Jim Brink, Brett Riley

Dante Gutierrez-Zamora joined Rotary shortly after moving to the valley three years ago.  He has served on the auction procurement committee twice and has filled a seat on the Board for a member who resigned.  Dante has enjoyed his time on the Board and believes he will do a good job if allowed to continue in that capacity.

Michelle Shermer has been a member of Rotary since 2016.  “Having served as a board member, membership committee co-chair, and Appleseed contributing reporter this past year, my insight into Rotary and our club has grown exponentially;  I'm especially looking forward to working on our re-energized Haiti project and continuing our efforts on the Membership Committee. Next year, I would also like to help with a Polio Day event to increase our advocacy for this cause and other similar efforts.”

Dan Maher has been a part of our Rotary club for two years, and is active in the auction procurement committee, as well as being involved with the S Wenatchee cleanup and the YWCA rebuild.  “I have pretty good tech skills and an amazing sense of humor. (my wife still laughs at me after 29 years)  I have enjoyed those I’ve met and am proud and happy to be a part of Rotary.”

Jim Brink  joined Wenatchee Rotary 6 months ago. He assisted with the Legacy Program and is currently working on the Auction Committee. “We moved to Wenatchee two years ago to retire. I wanted to get involved in community service and decided Rotary was the organization to make that happen. Being new to the community, I believe I can provide a different perspective to the club as a board member. My experience in the corporate world for 36 years could also provide new tools and processes for the club.”

Brett Riley has been a member of Rotary for a little over of year and half and has served with the Interact team for that time.  “The highlight of this last year in Interact is definitely the Habitat for Humanity project.  I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with the students and did some site cleanup and caulking alongside the home owner and other Rotarians.” Brett believes that his  “newness” to club will provide for a unique perspective as we look to grow our membership.

End Polio Now/Club 60:
Our ambitious goal has been set by President Pete at $10,000 ($192 per week!).
We continue our 10-year relationship with the Gates Foundation; since 2013, they have matched each dollar with $2 toward polio eradication.
Donations by club members on Dec. 06 = $16.30 bringing our total to $1227 or $3681 with the Gates match.  This equates to 6147 lives saved. Collections at KPQ were $1133.  Read about World Polio Day, October 24
