Dr. Terry Sorom (PP, 93-94) passed away July 6, 2019.    Memorial service was September 14, Grace Lutheran Church.  Read Judy Conner's touching tribute in previous Appleseed Obituary link.
Rocky Skalisky.  It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of former Rotarian, Rocky Skalisky September 6.  Rocky and spouse, Katrina Borth,  were active members of our Rotary club for several years. Rocky always had a smile on his face and a warm story to tell. He will be missed.  No obituary or arrangements have been published.

We’ve said farewell to two pillars of our Wenatchee Rotary Family in the past few weeks, Dick Harris and Terry Sorom.  Their memorial services were wonderful reminders of why Rotary is such a vibrant and needed organization in this world.  Throughout both of their memorial services, the international connections they made through RI were mentioned repeatedly.  Friendships crossing international borders for the betterment of the world- that is a foundational component of our organization.  This concept was highlighted for me during the Rose’ at the Roses event last week.  After most had gone home, Sue and Rick Rose shared with a few others of their RI connections.  Life long friendships were made with people from all over the world in the name of making a positive difference.  Another Rotarian shared with me that Rotary was vital in keeping them connected and grounded despite a work schedule that kept them out of town for stretches of time.  In the age of tweets, snapchats and instagrams, its so easy to lose the human touch that Rotary brings.

You are important in our Rotary life- even if you have limited time to participate.  Because its all about being connected with people who want to make a positive difference in our world.  And- to steal from Past RI President Dr. Cadman- you are the key to making a positive change and to connecting with good people locally and all across the planet we call home!     - Mike

    WEEK IN REVIEW SEPTEMBER 12
     WENATCHEE SCHOOLS
with Dr. Michelle Price & Dr. Paul Gordon

Our member, Michelle Price introduced the main speaker, Dr. Paul Gordon, Superintendent of Wenatchee schools.  But first, Michelle, Superintendent of the North Central Educational Service District  (NCESD), gave an update some current statewide education hot topics :
  • New school funding model
  • Results of recent levy initiative giving the state more control of local schools
  • Student safety issues and suicides
  • Crisis response planning
  • Family support programs
  • Capital projects
  • New pathways to graduation
  • Teacher shortages and more ......
Dr. Gordon first spoke glowingly about his family and his life journey, which included work in Chicago and Colorado. He and his wife Marianne love this community.  They have two children who live and work in Chicago and New York.  He emphasized his personal foundational principles-- integrity, relationships and inclusion.  He likes working closely with the school board and staff leaders, such as Kory and Ricardo.  He expressed enjoyment in answering many questions from club members.   Listen to the program here.

REPEATING BIG NEWS!

An incredibly generous grant of $26,000 is being made to the Wenatchee Rotary Club specifically for the Polio Plus campaign.  The benefactors, who are beloved members of our Rotary family, have requested that these funds be leveraged by all clubs in District 5060 to spur individual Rotarians to consider their individual contributions for this worthy cause.  To the benefactors we say- “Well Done- And Thank You!”.  For our club members, please consider your individual contributions to RI. It would be great to honor this generous gift by matching it with individual contributions.

EVEN BIGGER NEWS!  The same benefactors are also making substantial grants to District 5060 and to RI for a Guatemalan literacy program.  These are remarkable acts of generosity that will impact the world.

This proves that once again- It’s a Great Day to be a Rotarian!

SPEAKERS.   Are you thinking of sponsoring a speaker?  Guidelines are posted on our website under the main menu.  Or click here.

End Polio Now/Club 60:      Our goal this year is $7500, in spite of the secretary's erroneous report of no goal.  On September 12, Club-60-cup donations were $32.96 bringing our total to $328  or $984 with the Gates match!   This equates to 1643 lives potentially saved!  Plan now to participate in all our activities on World Polio Day, October 24.
Goal is $7500 for Rotary year

Note:  We continue our 10-year relationship with the Gates Foundation.  Since 2013, they have matched each dollar with $2 toward polio eradication.
