WEEK IN REVIEW OCTOBER 31  -  LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
With Senator Brad Hawkins
The meeting was opened by President Mike Kintner, who first introduced the pre-meeting entertainment host Paul Atwood who introduced two young performers from the All-District Musical "Matilda" being performed at Wenatchee High School Nov. 14 - 16, and 21-23.  Watch the  VIDEO here .  Obtain tickets here.

Then Mike gave or allowed the announcements below, before introducing Allan Galbraith who gave a humorous intro of the speaker, Senator Brad Hawkins.   The senator used an informative  PowerPoint to illustrate his presentation.   Listen to audio here .
Brad began serving the people of the 12th District in the Legislature in 2013 and to the Senate in 2018.
His legislative priorities focus on the essential services of government: education, transportation and public safety. As a former school-board member, he believes quality public schools and higher-education institutions can prepare a workforce to help the economy prosper. Maintaining state roads and bridges are vital to transporting the 12th District’s world-class agricultural products. He believes providing necessary law enforcement, judicial oversight and corrections will help maintain a safe environment for our businesses and families. Brad supports state budgeting efforts that are aligned to deliver these services in the most cost-effective manner possible.  He is currently the ranking member on the Early Learning and K-12 committees and serves on three other committees.

Brad grew up in the Wenatchee Valley and received his K-12 education in the Wenatchee School District.  After graduating magna cum laude from Central Washington University, he completed his Master’s in Public Administration at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

Brad returned to the Wenatchee Valley after graduation. He and his wife, Shawna, live in East Wenatchee with their two young children. He has been active in his community, serving on the North Central Educational Service District Board of Directors, Wenatchee Valley YMCA Board of Directors, and the Eastmont School Board, including two years as school-board president.

His key topics were these:  12th District overview;  State legislative process;  Recap of the 2019 session;  Look ahead to the 2020 session.

Thanks to Ashley Gillum and Jessica Kendall for this week's photos.

Just so ‘ya know…#23 - Community Outreach

Auction 2020 is fast approaching.  We have all been asked to pitch in to help make this auction one of our best.  How can you be directly involved?   However you see yourself involved, keep this in mind – Half of the proceeds will be going to help support one of Rotary’s main goals – improving educational opportunities for tomorrow’s leaders.
Recently I received a note from one of our upcoming ‘stars’ thanking Wenatchee Rotary for our financial support.  In part she said…

Growing up in a low-income family has not only offered financial challenges, but has also helped me realize the value of a college education.  I will be attending Gonzaga University where I plan to major in Mathematics which I plan to use as a math teacher. Thank you for your investment in students like me.  You have helped me get one step closer to my future success.

How can you help?  Raise your hand….and your paddle!

Having fun in Rotary,
Joe St.Jean
