It’s been a crazy couple of years. The players took an indefinite 7th inning stretch. It was we who ended up out on the field of hard hits. The mandates, shots, and division on the field ended in protest. It’s been two years since our lives have been put on hold. Our bat bags were crowded with social distancing, masks, gloves and hand sanitizer. Stay 6’ apart was stamped on the floors of local stores. Our daily routines consisted of virtual classrooms, zoom meetings and working from home. Social interaction STOPPED!
Do you know that a handshake is a powerful symbol of trust and equality? And what about the health benefits of a hug? It may help to reduce stress, protect against illness and a good squeeze may lead to decreased depression. But two years have gone by and we survived! It’s time to dust your bats off and let’s start hitting the ball back to normalcy.
The Board of Directors would like to continue to offer hybrid meetings at this time, but let’s hit a grand slam and shake the hand of a fellow Rotarian at Pybus Event Center. See you Thursday, masks or no masks it’s your choice.

DISTRICT CONFERENCE HOME HOSTING. Workhorse-Pete is also coordinating this activity for our club, as we have agreed to coordinate it for the conference. All 6 area clubs are involved, Wenatchee, East Wenatchee, Cashmere and Leavenworth. Our club should lead the way. Contact Pete to volunteer. The Discon will need a minimum of 50 volunteer home hosts.

WRF SEEKS BOARD MEMBERS. The Wenatchee Rotary Foundation (WRF) Board of Directors is seeking Rotary Club of Wenatchee members to serve on the Board of Directors, starting July 1, 2022.

DISTRICT CONFERENCE. May 13-15, Wenatchee Convention Center. Every member should attend. These annual events are routinely held in the hometown of the District Governor and would have been in 2021 but for the pandemic, which also caused the 2020 conference being virtual only. The last in-person event was Kamloops in 2019, with DG Sherry Chamberlain. The last time in Wenatchee was 2006, with PDG Jim Adamson; Jim is co-chair of our event with Rob Tidd. Conference Registration and info is found HERE. There are several options for attending all or portions of the event. Our club will play a major role, especially with coordination of Friday night home-hosting (as noted by PP Pete above) and Secretary Frank, as registrar.

Chelan Justice/Jail K9 Program

The speaker was introduced by Loren Stach of the Program Committee. Corrections Deputy Jacob Lewis was appointed the first K9 handler in 2019 for the Chelan County Jail. He brought with him, K9 Kait, a 6-year-old border collie originally from a rescue in Quincy. She is also also part of Chelan County Regional Justice Center’s Drug Interdiction program. The county jail’s K9 program is the second in the state to assign a canine to a county jail. Kait assists with drug detection for federal agencies and local schools, according to the news release. She was able to find narcotics in the inmate mail system within 5 minutes on her first day of assignment. It took only a few seconds in our meeting to find the right box, as pictured here. She was rewarded with a squeaky toy.
The K9 program is supported through donations, grants, fundraisers and other community contribution. And as a part of the 1-year anniversary of the program, people can support the program can buy a pullover hoodie. For details go to wwrld.us/fundraiser.

Wenatchee Confluence Rotary is home club to Governor Richard DeRock, so the District 5060 Conference is in Wenatchee this year. It is May 13-15 with different activities planned. Our club is responsible for Home Hosting, so consider making dinner Friday the 14th for two to six out-of-town guest Rotarians. It is usually a charming evening and a great way to meet others (and finally put the Sous Vide machine you had to have for Christmas to good use).
