WEEK IN REVIEW JULY 25 -  OPIOID CRISIS &

ADDICTION IN WENATCHEE

With Bill Murray and Loretta Stover, Exec. Director of

Read related story in Wenatchee World

Bill Murray (PP 2015-16) was introduced by P/E Kory Kalahar  who mentioned two excellent related novels : Beautiful Boy - David Shef, and Tweak: Growing Up on Meth - Nic Shef.   The former is also a movie.   Bill works for Action Health Partners as a Care Coordinator and has his Master’s Degree in Education and is a National Certified Counselor.   Bill stated the following.  "My participation is 2-fold:

  1. My job as a CC with Action Health Partners has me working with clients on both Medicare and Medicaid – the sickest and poorest. My area of specialty within this population is mental health. Of the 40 clients I work with on a monthly basis approximately 30 have current use of opioids or past use of opioids. Most use opioids legally but some do not.
  2. This past March, 2019, I participated in a community forum called North Central Washington Opioid Response Conference – Pathways to Prevention, with about 200 people attending in Wenatchee and other participants gathering around NCW. Our group split into 2 groups of 100 each, and I agreed to be a co-leader of my group. Senator Parlette gave the regional welcome."
From this large representation of our community, there were 2 staff from Action Health Partners, 2 staff from Columbia Valley Community Health, and 1 staff from Confluence Health. We quickly developed a proposal for a grant for up to 25,000 to develop an opioid prevention program for our local schools and community at large. This grant was through the North Central Accountable Community of Health and Coalition for Health Improvement Community Initiaves Program under the State Medicaid Transformation Project.
Why is this grant request necessary?
At the peak of the opioid crisis in 2015 there were over 111,000,000 doses Rx in WA state
In WA state, in 2017, the opioid related disease burden was:
  • 324,000 persons over the age of 12 who misused pain killers
  • 14,389 opioid abuse treatment admissions
  • 1, 615 over dose hospitalizations, and
  • 739 deaths.
  • In Douglas County there have been 83 deaths from opioids since 2000
  • In Chelan County there have been 179 deaths from opioids since 2000
Opioids are chemical cousins of heroine and are highly addictive. Fifty percent of teens who abused prescription drugs took them from their parent’s medicine cabinet. Ninety percent of parents believe their child has never abused prescription drugs. Bill introduced Loretta Stover, Executive Director of the Center for Alcohol and Drug Treatment. She holds a Master's Degree in Education and is a Chemical Dependency Professional. She has been at the Center for 27 years. VIDEO and story on NCW LIFE TV.

End Polio Now/Club 60:    As we begin our new Rotary year, we are coming off a fantastic year, raising about $10K.  Thanks to Judy Conner for that huge finishing [ush over the top!.    On July 25, donations by club members to the Club-60 cups were $29.11 bringing our total to $87 or $261 with the Gates match!  This equates to 435 lives potentially saved!
No goal set for this year

Note:  We continue our 10-year relationship with the Gates Foundation.  Since 2013, they have matched each dollar with $2 toward polio eradication.
