THIS WEEK - PORT OF CHELAN
With Rory Turner, Port Commissioner
The Port of Chelan County is a countywide special purpose district, established in 1958 by the voters to support economic development in Chelan County. Rory Turner was elected to the position of Port Commissioner in 2015 to a six year term, his first elected office.
Rory is a commercial property developer by profession, and is a principal or partner in many real estate investments in Chelan and Douglas counties, as well as in other parts of the state. He has won multiple statewide awards for adaptive reuse of historic buildings, most recently for his renovation of the former Elks Building in Ellensburg. He recently partnered with other investors to combine that property into a 59 room boutique hotel development which broke ground this past summer.  Commissioner Turner will speak on current Port District activities.
Over the past several years the Port has undertaken a more active work program and is using its tools to support private sector growth. Its three principal lines of business include the operation of Pangborn Memorial Airport, its development and management of industrial and commercial buildings, and more broadly, economic development and marketing. Within those three lines, a long list of specific projects are underway or planned, including efforts to continue passenger growth at Pangborn by improving facilities and attracting new carriers to serve new routes; developing real estate to support business expansion and attract new companies to the area, including construction of light industrial buildings in Cashmere and the construction and successful marketing of the Technology Incubator at Pybus Market; and increasing the marketing of Chelan County to the world while providing tools to local business, through ChooseChelanCounty.com, industry sector committees and work groups, and targeted marketing to quality companies in priority sectors, with recent results including the Diamond Foundry, Subsplash and Ultra Polymers.

The Port is also a party to a significant proposed agreement with Chelan Public Utility District that would entail: the relocation of the PUD headquarters to Olds Station; the consolidation of the Hawley Street maintenance facility into the news Olds Station site; the sale of the PUD’s ownership in the Confluence Technology Center to the Port; and the Port, PUD and City of Wenatchee engaging in a joint planning process for the reuse and redevelopment of the 5th Street downtown headquarters site. Lastly, there’s a very important set of issues related to funding of the Airport into the future. There are also different initiatives in Manson, Leavenworth and other places worth taking about so needless to say Rory has a lot to update us on regarding the current Port program!

WEEK IN REVIEW, October 11 - Candidate Forum #2

Wenatchee World publisher Jeff Ackerman again moderated an informative candidate forum, featuring four well-qualified candidates for the state legislative district 12.  For Position 1, they were Dr. Ann Diamond and Keith Goehner; for Position 2, incumbent Mike Steele, and challenger Valerie Serratt.   Story in Wenatchee World, October 12.  See last week's Appleseed for campaign information.
The format was the same as last week's forum.  Each was allowed 4 minutes to introduce themselves, and then a total of about 7 minutes each to state why they wanted to serve, and outline what they hope to accomplish.  All candidates gave excellent and thoughtful presentations.
President Pete presented each with a certificate of donation to PolioPlus in their names.

Just so ‘ya know…  Community Outreach in action

This past Thursday was the final 2nd Harvest Food Distribution for this year for Wenatchee area Rotary Clubs. This smiling crew helped pass out 10,000 pounds of food to over 200 families with approximately 800 of our needy neighbors benefitting. The money for this project was raised during our Building Communities Auction held January 2017. We need to all get behind this January’s auction!

Our ambitious goal has been set by President Pete at $10,000 ($192 per week!).
We continue our 10-year relationship with the Gates Foundation; since 2013, they have matched each dollar with $2 toward polio eradication.
Donations by club members on Oct. 11 = $157.15 thus bringing our total $779 or $2337 with the Gates match.  This equates to 3902 lives saved. Read about World Polio Day, October 24
