     UPCOMING PROGRAMS
    AUGUST 29 - ROTARY PARK
with Rich Peters (PP 2001 - 2003)
On site at the new shelter!
Rich was president when the big 17-year project began.  He made these statements at the recent dedication of the new picnic shelter.
"My vision was to have all 4 area Rotary clubs working  together on a project. East Wenatchee had committed to a little project of building Miss Veedol.   March 2002-Rotary Club of Wenatchee, Wenatchee Sunrise and Wenatchee North club presidents (Rich Peters, Julie Brunner, Brian Campbell) met with Mayor Johnson to discuss building a Baseball complex. Mayor Johnson said they had a piece of land that was bought for a future park.  We looked at this 7 acre site and found it to be too small for 6 ball fields shaped in a rotary wheel design.  From this review came the direction of 'Let’s build a park'.
The members of the three 3 clubs were all on board as long as we could call it Rotary Park......"  Come and hear the rest of the story.
Visit our dedicated Rotary Park web page  .

The state of recycling in Wenatchee:
What REALLY goes in your blue bin and why you shouldn't be an aspirational recycler.
Jana gave a brief overview of her background, with these highlights.  She ...

  • became interested in environment issues during her senior year at WSU
  • obtained a Masters degree in Environmental Studies at Evergreen State College

She explained the current global market for recycling, including:
  • China's national Sword Policy (they stopped taking our low-grade trash)
  • Pricing has crashed 95% since early 2017
  • Recycled materials here are sorted by Waste Management, shipped to Spokane
  • Each municipality has its own unique contract with WM
"Recycle often, Recycle right!"  the importance of correct recycling
  • Clean paper and cardboard
  • Clean plastic bottles, no caps or lids
  • Clean metal cans
  • No plastic bags or sheets, or paper cups or ice cream cartons

REPEATING BIG NEWS!

An incredibly generous grant of $26,000 is being made to the Wenatchee Rotary Club specifically for the Polio Plus campaign.  The benefactors, who are beloved members of our Rotary family, have requested that these funds be leveraged by all clubs in District 5060 to spur individual Rotarians to consider their individual contributions for this worthy cause.  To the benefactors we say- “Well Done- And Thank You!”.  For our club members, please consider your individual contributions to RI. It would be great to honor this generous gift by matching it with individual contributions.

EVEN BIGGER NEWS!  The same benefactors are also making substantial grants to District 5060 and to RI for a Guatemalan literacy program.  These are remarkable acts of generosity that will impact the world.

This proves that once again- It’s a Great Day to be a Rotarian!

August 10.  Keep up to date with Karen Russell on her personal Caring Bridge page.
PP Jim (2016-17) is an Honorary member.  Karen is has decided it's time for hospice.

SPEAKERS.   Are you thinking of sponsoring a speaker?  Guidelines are posted on our website under the main menu.  Or click here.

End Polio Now/Club 60:      Our goal this year is $7500, in spite of the secretary's erroneous report of no goal.  On August 22, Club-60-cup donations were $73.40 bringing our total to $261  or $783 with the Gates match!   This equates to 1307 lives potentially saved!  The amount includes $40 from auction of fresh pie to Allan Galbraith (donated by Pete Van Well).
Goal is $7500 for Rotary year

Note:  We continue our 10-year relationship with the Gates Foundation.  Since 2013, they have matched each dollar with $2 toward polio eradication.
