FEBRUARY 21 -  ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY AT WVC

The need for hands-on engineering technologists is rapidly growing, and many industrial partners are interested in an educated workforce that not only can communicate well, but also have the knowledge, skills and ability to use critical thinking in solving problems.

The Bachelor of Applied Science Engineering Technology (BAS-ET) degree was designed to serve the educational and workforce needs of the region. The new program is for two groups of students:

  1. Those who have completed a related technical associate degree (such as the associate of technical science in industrial technology)
  2. Those who have completed an associate of arts and sciences-direct transfer agreement (AAS-DTA).

The degree focuses on electronics and mechatronics, which is comprised of engineering, including mechanical, electrical, telecommunications, control and computer engineering. The program coursework includes general education requirements and provides students with a foundation in physics, chemistry and math.

Through a combination of face-to-face, hybrid and online classes, this full-time program will take traditional students four years to earn the BAS-ET degree. Students who have earned an associate degree can complete the BAS-ET in two to three years, depending on coursework previously taken.

Graduates of four-year engineering technology programs may seek employment as entry-level electrical or electronics engineers, or applied engineers.

On Saturday, February 23, 2019 - The Wenatchee Valley Symphony Orchestra will Salute local service clubs; we are encouraged to attend and enjoy a $10 discount, as sent to us by Corinne Shalev Rosenbach.

       ANNOUNCEMENTS

President Pete opened the meeting of the Cleopatra/Mark Anthony, Romeo & Juliet, Scarlett O'Hara/Rett Butler, etc. of Rotary clubs and wished everyone Happy Valentine on this special day of love, suggesting hugs and kisses for all!  After welcoming several guests, Pete made or allowed the announcements below.

Chaplain Paul Pankey offered an invocation and prayers for several members who have experienced family loss or health issues, such as  Carmen Bossenbrock , recently moved from hospital back to Regency for recuperation from surgery (3rd time in a year).

President Pete opined that since Rotary service and giving are rooted in love (placing the welfare of others ahead of ourselves), it is appropriate to have an update on our giving to our Rotary Foundation.  Tom Ross, club Foundation Chair, gave an overview of our giving to The Rotary Foundation (TRF) and explained its different funds.  Our total giving this Rotary year (to date since June) amounts to $7880, including PolioPlus.   Listen to Tom.   View Tom's 2-page PowerPoint .
Pete went on to explain the Paul Harris Fellowship, and then surprised Tom with a PHF +1.  Pete mentioned that there will be a TRF meeting locally with PDG Pete Erickson (District chair) on March 12 (6-7PM) in the LINK board room for all members, especially TRF club chairs and incoming presidents.

On March 28, DG Sherry will be with us for a special presentation.   Pete also promoted the recently-announced district leadership training RLI Wenatchee in April, Rotary's excellent 2-day leadership training program.  Cost is $170, including meals.

Michelle Shermer spoke about her activities and plans with the ONE Campaign, and solicited support from our members to help her advocate with congress members on her trip to DC next week.  She emphasized that ONE partners with TRF as well as the US government and other programs.
Dawn Davies promoted the Humane Society Auction on Saturday  2/16.
Tom Everly promoted the upcoming Camp Fire fund-raising auction March 6 supporting after-school programs and Camp Zanika.  Table sponsorships are only  $250.    Listen  to Michelle, Dawn and Tom.
There are a few openings left for Pete's Pool Party in July at $40 pp.  Contact Jill or Jay.  Pete ended the meeting by giving away some chocolate goodies as recognition for short or long relationships.  Pete's Good news:  "All you need is love, love is all you need!"   heart

Repeating from last week.
Gary Provo on Special Olympics.    Time is again approaching for the Special Olympics of Washington (SOWA) -- Winter Games.  The 2019 event is scheduled for March 1st, 2nd and 3rd and numerous games are planned for venues in Mission Ridge, Wenatchee and Leavenworth.  Sign up at the SOWA website, where detailed information on the various games and volunteer opportunities can be found.  Please join your fellow Rotarian's in supporting this very worthwhile effort.
Several members have already signed up for a pre-event work party occurring on Friday afternoon, Friday February 22nd, from 4;00 pm to 7:00 pm, at Foothills Four Square, 315 So. Mission.  We will meet in the basement.   Volunteers will help prepare table centerpieces with painted cardboard silhouettes fitting this years theme "Dancing Through the Decades".   The work party will also construct "Apple Boxes" from pallets.  Power tools and crow bars are needed, however other hardware is provided.  For more details, please contact Candace Hansen from the Game Management Team at: missqueencandace@gmail.com.
If you volunteered last year, you may have already received an invitation to help again at individual Winter Games events.

End Polio Now/Club 60:
Our ambitious goal has been set by President Pete at $10,000 ($192 per week!).
We continue our 10-year relationship with the Gates Foundation; since 2013, they have matched each dollar with $2 toward polio eradication.
Donations by club members on Jan.  14 = $28.10 bringing our total to $1501 or $4503 with the Gates match.  This equates to 7520 lives potentially saved. Collections at KPQ were $1133.  Read about World Polio Day, October 24
