Program Last Week - A CLASSIFICATION TALK
With Clover Simon
Sponsored Michelle Shermer
Introduced by President Jill
Clover joined the club in June 2022, sponsored by Michelle Shermer. She has her master’s in social work and has worked in non-profit service and management for over 30 years, primarily in reproductive health and poverty prevention.
She was very open in discussing her background, her family, and her professional career, and stated her intense belief in proudly proclaiming her truth to her community. Clover describes herself as a second-generation "hippie", While on a national 'bus tour', her parents stopped in the area for the apple harvest and were later featured in the Wenatchee World (1972). Her father is still an orchardist in Okanogan County. Clover obtained a BS in biochemistry/Physiology at Evergreen State, and a master's in Social Work at EWU. She has supported or worked with several organizations dedicated to helping vulnerable people. She is currently employed by Planned Parenthood in Wenatchee. Acknowledging that her work is controversial, she believes it is important for people to discuss issues they disagree on and seek common ground.
Alatheia Therapeutic Riding Center (ATRC) is a nonprofit therapeutic horseback riding facility that serves the special needs and Veteran communities of Chelan, Douglas, Okanogan and Grant Counties. We serve 100 riders (ages 3-87) each week with the help of more than 150 volunteers. Alatheia’s vision is that all NCW people with disabilities are contributing and valued members of the greater community who have enhanced lives and dreams fulfilled.
Therapeutic riding positively affects physical, social and cognitive functions for individuals with disabilities. For the physically disabled child or adult it improves strength, balance, and coordination. For those with autism, the interpersonal interactions experienced improve social skills; for the learning disabled it opens pathways to learning. All translate into improvements in daily life activities. Over time, participants gain insight into their individual strengths and identify areas for improvement. The progress they make with ATRC sets a foundation to move on to more challenging physical and intellectual endeavors.
The CDAC mission is to end poverty by helping people and changing lives. Donated funds will be used to relocate our food distribution center facility to meet the growth in demand. We have been in the same facility for over 30-years, however, the amount of food we distribute has grown from 200,000 pounds a year to 2 million pounds. We support twenty-two food pantries, meal sites and senior living facilities throughout Chelan and Douglas County. Our current facility lacks the space to receive, inventory and distribute the quantity of food we are receiving.
How are we going to do this?

PAUL HARRIS FELLOWS. Recognition was presented by Foundation Chair Frank Clifton -
Lauren Scanga - Paul Harris Fellow
Jill Leonard - PHF+2 (her second move up this year)
Reminding the members of Pete Erickson's proclamation that 'Rotary would not exist without the Foundation', Frank encouraged all Rotarians to give at least $25 each year and reminded them that we are still giving matching points for $100 donations this Rotary year.
Frank's good news: our giving has propelled our club to 30% above President Jill's goal of $4,000;
the bad news: all giving has been done by only 20% of the members.
To be recognized by RI as an EREY Club, each member must donate $25 to the annual fund, and total club giving to the annual fund must be at least $100 per active member.

Several members recognized this service project quickly from 2018.
2nd Harvest food distribution in mid-October 2018 at the Wenatchee Community Center. A total of over 850 families were served by our 5 food trucks that summer, with over 14,000 pounds of fresh food distributed. The Club volunteered at 3 of the food distributions. But this service has been ended.
