Come hear the Wenatchee YMCA's vision to serve the valley for the next 100 years
Program Last Week -Laura Gloria, City of Wenatchee, Executive Services Director
Sponsored by Ford Barrett
Laura gave an overview of upcoming downtown developments and the city’s efforts to create a cohesive vision, plan and funding mechanism. She was informative and knowledgeable, using a detailed PowerPoint as illustrations. Three of her many images are shown to give a flavor of the program quality.
Laura was born in Mexico and raised in California, mostly in the Fresno area. She graduated from California State University, Fresno with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. Laura moved to Wenatchee in 2019 to be closer to her family who lived in this state. Previously Laura served as a Deputy City Manager for the City of Fresno, the fifth largest City in California with a population of over 500,000. There she led a variety of projects and programs including applying, receiving, and administrating a $66.5 million Transformative Climate Communities grant.
Laura oversees the environmental assessment for Confluence Parkway, a $135 million multi-modal transportation project. As the Executive Services Director she supports the Mayor and City Council through the implementation and oversight of executive level projects, programs, and policy; she represents the City on a variety of boards and committees; negotiates complex contracts, advises and consults with the mayor on strategic issues; assists with decision making and provides leadership in problem-solving citywide issues; and monitors public relations activities.
NEW MEMBER INDUCTION. Our newest member Kevin Litterell was inducted, with an excellent charge delivered by PP Rich Peters (2001-03). Kevin is plant manager for Tekni-plex Packagingin Wenatchee and is sponsored by President Jill. The charge was an amazing recitation of the achievements of the club 20 years ago (during Rich's tenure), when the club was named by District 5060 the MOST outstanding club, for completing many significant projects, locally and internationally. The club president had one message: "Find something that excites you and get involved." That year, the club volunteered more than 15,000 hours and achieved amazing things, but like all Rotarians, Rich took no credit! Rich urged all members and their families to get involved and be empowered. Listen to this 5-minute presentation HERE.
PROPOSALS. The board has approved a membership application for Anna Collum, a colleague of Tom Ross. She will be inducted on October 27, if no objections. Feedback accepted here.
SERVICE PROJECT. November 5- Siege Weapon Competition with Westside Students. These students will be constructing the "siege weapons". The competition takes place at Annie’s Fun Farm in East Wenatchee, at 10 am. Volunteers are needed to help manage the people's choice vote and help with competition setup. To sign up, contact Sean Cooper.

Heidi Myers was first to guess where the photos were taken. The story was then revealed by Eric Nelson, former YMCA Director. The Rotary Cabin at the Lake Wenatchee YMCA Camp was built in 1952. The Chapel Bell Tower at camp was funded by Rotary in 1959. In 1964, the YMCA lobby was remodeled. There was (is?) a logo on the fireplace recognizing Rotary’s support of the project. If the logo is still there, a photo would be a great puzzler for your intro question. The Sport Wall in the gym was funded by Rotary in the early 2000’s. Rotary contributed to the Outdoor Education Center camp in the early 2000’s. Rotary was a major contributor to the Nelson Cabin at camp in 2017. Larry Handy was the YMCA General Secretary from 1947 -1966 served as Rotary Club Secretary during many of those years (before Carol Norton). Rotary has been a major contributor to the Y’s annual Youth Scholarship Fund for most of the last 50 years. Many Rotarians have Served as YMCA Board members. At least five YMCA staff members have also been Rotarians (Handy, Hartog, Bossenbrock, Nelson, Foster).

VETERANS DAY. This year we are encouraging a Pair and Share with our local veterans for Veteran’s Day.
CLICK THE IMAGE TO SIGNUP. You will be paired with a Veteran to coordinate your activities. Of course, President Jill suggests attending the Wenatchee Wild game on November 12. This game is Military Appreciation Night. All veterans get a free ticket. And our club will be doing the 50/50 tickets to continue our fight against Polio.
Other options are: lunch, coffee, Wenatchee Symphony. There are no rules, except send a photo to President Jill or Secretary Frank Clifton.
EXCHANGE STUDENTS. Outbound Exchange Student Elani Scott has arrived in Argentina after some paperwork confusion. Let’s flood her with emails of encouragement and support. Her email is: elaniscottk@gmail.com
Inbound RYE student Rosario Munoz presented her wish list of things she would like to experience; it is heavy on outdoor activities, such as mountain-biking (she has access to Carin Smith's bike). See last week's Appleseed for pics of her time with Carin and Andy. Here she is discussing with Katie Blair, a former outbound exchange.
