RECENT SAD LOSSES

It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of former Rotarians and a spouse.
Rocky Skalisky.   Rocky and spouse, Katrina Borth,  were active members of our Rotary club for several years. Rocky always had a smile on his face and a warm story to tell. He will be missed.  View the obituary here.

Gerald (Jerry) Copp.  Jerry joined the club in September of 1991, and became an honorary member in January 2018 due to failing health.

Gary Mertes died on 9/18 as reported by Bud Truswell, who was a business partner. Gary joined 4/01/70, left on 12/31/03, and served many years as treasurer.   View the obituary here.

Karen Russell passed away 9/21.  She was not a member, but was the beloved wife of Jim Russell. (PP 2016-17).  View preliminary obituary here as provided on her Caring Bridge site by Jim.  The family is planning a celebration service Saturday, October 26 at Trinity United Methodist Church in East Wenatchee, 1 PM.

Tom McNair says that Pat's topic will cover "Internet Security Essentials: Simple steps you can take to protect your family and business from hackers, viruses and other cyber threats".
Pat Lamphere has worked in IT for over 20 years, and has been solely focused on Information Security for the past 15.  He has consulted from Manila to Hyderabad, and briefed most NATO and EU member governments on observed adversarial tactics and ways to improve their compliance regimes.  Pat currently works for Oracle in Seattle on ways to automate deployment of compliant environments on the Oracle second generation cloud.  He also works with startups and small businesses on improving their security posture.
he majored in Law & Justice at Central Washington University, with an emphasis on Criminal Justice, and worked in the Criminal Justice system after graduation.  When he decided to change careers he worked at the Naval Undersea Warfare Engineering Station at Keyport, Washington, where he specialized in mainframe security.  He has worked in cyber security ever since.
In his spare time, Pat enjoys playing tuba in the West Seattle Community Orchestra.  Pat is Tom McNair’s God Son.

   OKTOBERFEST AT THE MYERS'
This month's Rotary fellowship event at the home of Don & Heidi Myers was a rousing success, as many Rotarians enjoyed a feast of beer and Don's special brats roasted on on the outdoor grille.  We sat around a blazing fire where the air was cool but the conversation warm.

Waiting for more pics

  • October is Polio MonthPP Pete Van Well outlined plans for October 24, World Polio Day , and wants everyone involved, in collections at KPQ, and/or at the "World's Greatest Dinner to End Polio" potluck at the Senior Center.  Contact Pete if you will attend.  Jim Russell will be here.
  • Community ServiceGary Provo and Joe St. Jean performed a tag-team presentation on the merging of two committees : Community Service and Outreach.  They hope to involve each member of the club in a minimum of 1 service project each year.  An on-line skills survey will be available on our website home page menu "SERVICE" (for now, login is required).  LISTEN    View the PowerPoint as a PDF.
  • Fellowship Event.   November 01, 6 - 8 PM.  Dia de los Muertos, partnering with The WV Museum & Cultural Center, and Norma Gallegos.  This is a celebration of life and death, honoring many who have left us, and it will be fun and colorful with music and good food.

GENEROUS DONORS REVEALED!

An incredibly generous grant of $26,000 is being made to the Wenatchee Rotary Club specifically for the Polio Plus campaign.  The benefactors, who are beloved members of our Rotary family, have requested that these funds be leveraged by all clubs in District 5060 to spur individual Rotarians to consider their individual contributions for this worthy cause.  To the benefactors we say- “Well Done- And Thank You!”.  For our club members, please consider your individual contributions to RI. It would be great to honor this generous gift by matching it with individual contributions.

EVEN BIGGER NEWS!  The same benefactors are also making substantial grants to District 5060 and to RI for a Guatemalan literacy program, totaling up to $101,000.  These are remarkable acts of generosity that will impact the world.  The generous donors have been revealed as Jim and Karen Russell!

This proves that once again- It’s a Great Day to be a Rotarian!

Karen Russell has passed away.  Find out more on her personal Caring Bridge page.
PP Jim (2016-17) is an Honorary member.  This is the most recent report.  Jim plans to be with us on October 24.

SPEAKERS.   Are you thinking of sponsoring a speaker?  Guidelines are posted on our website under the main menu.  Or click here.

End Polio Now/Club 60:      Our goal this year is $7500.  On October 10, Club-60-cup donations totaled  $56.05 bringing our total to $562  or $1686 with the Gates match!   This equates to 2815 lives potentially saved!  Plan now to participate in all our activities on World Polio Day, October 24.  [Note last week's totals were in error]
Goal is $7500 for Rotary year

Note:  We continue our 10-year relationship with the Gates Foundation.  Since 2013, they have matched each dollar with $2 toward polio eradication.
