Remembering Dick Harris.
We remain saddened by the death of Richard “Dick” Harris. Dick died June 21 at the Highgate care facility in Wenatchee. He had been there since late winter and had recently been having respiratory issues.

Dick was a past president (1979-1980) and a past District 5060 Governor (1995-1996). He joined the club in 1972. He was a multiple Paul Harris and Paul Scea fellow. Dick was well known for the many Rotary friends he had throughout the world. Dick and Bonnie attended numerous International Conventions and made friends that they would correspond with and quite often visit.

His service and dedication to Wenatchee Rotary is a high-water mark few, if any, of us will attain. His memorial service will be held July 24 at FUMC in Wenatchee, 2 PM.   View Dick's obituary in the Wenatchee World.
Remembering Terry Sorom.
It is with more sadness that we wish farewell to Dr. Terry Sorom who passed away July 6, 2019.  Terry was a past-president (1993-94), and left a deep footprint in the Wenatchee Valley through his work as an ophthalmologist, as a philanthropist, through his intellect and wit.  Terry was a beloved figure in the community and especially within the Wenatchee Rotary family.  His friendship was highly valued by all who knew him.  Terry embodied the very best that a Rotarian strives to be- which ultimately is to leave the world better off than when you arrived.  Terry truly accomplished this.  Our prayers are with Suzanne and the Sorom Family.

What is your Rotary Value Proposition? Come on. We all go through a similar thought process. Why am I a Rotarian? And, am I getting out of my membership what it costs me to belong?  Rotarians are asked to donate a significant amount of time, money and energy as a "cost" of being a Rotarian.  Are you getting a reasonable return for your investment?   Your board is wrestling with that issue on behalf of our members. You will be happy to know that there are some really fun and interesting opportunities coming your way to answer that question with a resounding "Oh Yeah!".
Keep on reading your Appleseed for details. Or better yet, your fellow Rotarians would love to see you at our club meetings and projects.  It's a Great Day to be a Rotarian...Oh Yeah!

JULY 11 - WHAT IN THE WORLD IS GOING ON WITH ROTARY?
with President Mike Kintner

This will be the first ever video address by a district governor, in this case, our incoming DG Peter Schultz. It will be interesting and informative.   Ring in the new year by catching up on RI, District and club info.

JULY 18 -  ANNUAL VISIT BY DISTRICT GOVERNOR
DR. PETER SCHULTZ

DG Peter Schultz (Kelowna) will be here in person for a townhall-style Q & A session.
A special appearance by the Wenatchee Apollo Club will start us off.  Two new Rotarians will also be inducted.

Also...who is the mystery Rotarian of the Day?  Be the quarterly points leader- and win $50 in Pybus Bucks. Gotta be at the club meeting for your chance to win.
Before the meeting, DG Peter will meet with our board of directors at 10:30 AM in the Cadman Room.

With Peter’s visit, we’ll talk about goals and particularly our efforts to increase membership.  Later, at the 4:30 board meeting, we’ll go through our on-going business- which shouldn’t take much time.  From there, we’ll need to talk about committee participation- especially on Membership and Fellowship Committees.

     WEEK IN REVIEW - JUNE 27, 2019
   END OF YEAR CELEBRATION
with iPP Don Myers and others with thoughts about President Pete

As a  PowerPoint photo tribute to President Pete  scrolled in the background,  Don Myers opened the meeting of the Pete Van Well of Rotary clubs to applause & whoops from the unusually large attendance.  The first announcement was bad news:  this is the final meeting of our beloved exchange student Chloe Crasson who is returning to Belgium soon.  Carin Smith announced Chloe's goodbye party.   A notable guest was recognized - past-president Richard Riggs (2008 - 09), currently a member of Champagne, IL Rotary.  Other guests included Penny Carpenter (again) and President Pete's family, including Pete's daughter and mother-in-law and both Carmens.

Don directed Pete to sit in a special lounge chair on stage where he could be the center of attention, and proclaimed him "King of Superlatives", naming a few of his favorites, especially "The Bailey Building and Loan" of Rotary Clubs.  Don declared Pete the "Mount Everest" of Rotary presidents, and suitably awarded him with a candy bar and a bottle of good Scotch whiskey (not Johnny Walker Blue).

Because of Pete's dedication to the cause of polio eradication, Don chose an inspiring brief related video.  After the video, Don praised the success of the Club-60 fund-raising this year in an effort to reach Pete's ambitious goal of $10,000 and encouraged donations sufficient to put us over the top (results will be listed below), then declaring Pete to be the modern day Ed Cadman of our club, presented him a candy bar!
PP Bill Murray (2015-16) was asked to say a and few words about Pete, and he declared his admiration for Pete as his own "Super-hero" because of Pete's big heart.  He praised Pete's willingness to take on big projects to help others, especially polio, but also the Haiti clean-water initiatives.   He loves how Pete lifts us up with his inspiring stories each week.  Pete has "Rotarian character".

Joe St. Jean (Community Outreach Committee chair) reminded us of some of our giving this year., recognizing Tom Everly who thanked the club for our help, especially the recent "Gaga Ball" pit.  He was presented with an  $1800 grant for a new floating dock.  Don then displayed many auction-disbursement checks, soon to be presented to various causes.  He then named Pete as the Abraham Lincoln of Rotary presidents, presenting him a candy bar.  He read some letters from others praising Pete, especially from Carmen Bossenbrock, outgoing assistant governor Carol Adamson.  Leavenworth president Penny Carpenter  read her own letter and presented Pete with her little book of inspirational sayings from her Rotary year. Don then declared Pete the Mother Teresa of Rotary presidents, presenting him with a candy bar.

As with Pete's habit, Don ended his program with some Good news for today: no more superlatives for us!
For Pete .....
  • far fewer emails
  • the opportunity to enjoy a meal without others watching
  • no unexpected announcements interrupting a well-planned agenda
The BEST news... "Pete, you have led us with vision, integrity, passion, style, and class.  You are the Winston Churchill, the Nelson Mandela, the George Washington, and the Paul Harris of Rotary presidents!"
Don then asked all members to come forward and speak some personal words to Pete, and also to bring him candy bars from their tables.
Then, as the Superman theme  played, super-heroes Superman and Wonder Woman appeared (Gil Sparks and Sue Rose)  and spoke to Pete's secret fetish as a DC comic fanatic. They quizzed Pete with many hilarious DC comic trivia questions ending with "What is Clark Kent's middle name?"  Find out yourself at this Superman link

Pete spoke briefly and thanked the club for their support, and is excited about the year ahead under president Mike Kintner.  Mike then addressed the club briefly, recognizing those to follow him, Kory Kalahar and Alice Meyer and presenting them with special pins selected by Mike and wife Tammy at the recent RI Convention (Alice's was designed for women in Rotary).  Mike reminded the club of Dick Harris' funeral July 24 and about the next few meetings, including the visit from the District Governor Peter Schultz.  Mike read the names of the raffle winners, which included Chloe's guest Emily outgoing RYE student to Finland.

Final Good news from Mike... "it's been a great year with Pete Van Well, a shining example of what is right with Rotary in the world". This was followed by a standing ovation for Pete.

SPEAKERS.   Are you thinking of sponsoring a speaker?  Guidelines are posted on our website under the main menu.  Or click here.

End Polio Now/Club 60:    Our ambitious goal was set by President Pete at $10,000.  On June 27, donations by club members to the Club-60 cups were $300.39 bringing our total to $9,036 or $27,108 with the Gates match!  This equates to 45,270 lives potentially saved! This does not include other possible matching donations or other recent sources.
                               $9,036

Note:  We continue our 10-year relationship with the Gates Foundation.  Since 2013, they have matched each dollar with $2 toward polio eradication.  Collections at KPQ on Polio Day were $1,133.  Read about 2018 World Polio Day, October 24
