MAY IS ROTARY'S YOUTH SERVICE MONTH

PROGRAM THIS WEEK
On Wednesday - Don't miss the All-Service-Club Lunch

Then, Thursday at Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center:
Classification
With Katie Blair
Who does not love classification talks, where we get to learn all about our newest members?  This one is likely to be a classic.  Katie returns to us as maybe the only outbound exchange student to come back home and join the club and even join the board.  First, as a student in the early 2000s, she was a founding member of the Interact Club at WHS, and then was our outbound Rotary Youth Exchange to France, 2006-07.  We discovered her living near Broadway in NYC at the dawn of the COVID pandemic.  But there are lots of international adventures for her to tell us about.
Katie joined the club in September 2022, sponsored by Kory Kalahar.

We no longer offer lunch.

"A Doctor's War"
Letters and Reflections from the Frontlines of World War II
With Author Peggy Ludwick

Peggy was introduced by Rachel Evey, and used a short video and an excellent illustrated PowerPoint to tell the story of her father's experiences based on his detailed letters, photographs, and many artifacts that he brought home from North Africa and Italy.

A DOCTOR’S WAR is a unique perspective of war. As a Medical Officer on the frontlines of WWII, responsible for the physical and emotional well-being of traumatized and wounded soldiers, Lt. Col./Maj. Arthur L. Ludwick was engaged in some of North Africa and Italy’s bloodiest battles. This riveting historical narrative is also a daughter’s discovery of the courageous and idealistic young man she never knew, before he became her father.
Dr. Arthur L. Ludwick was a beloved family physician in Wenatchee for over 50 years, taking care of generations of families.

IMAGINE ROTARY MOMENTS.

ROTARY:  WHY JOIN, WHY STAY?

When I started meeting with members last year.  I asked 2 questions.   Why did you join Rotary?  Why do you stay?

Some were expected to as part of their employment, or family obligations, some joined for the networking, others to meet people.   The common thread was the passion to make a impact.   Why stay?  The collective impact made as a group.  Much bigger than oneself.  Many shared stories of how Rotary has helped them grow as person.   How they have met lifelong friends and how they could not see a life without Rotary.
This is what makes us so special.

I Googled "What motivates you to join Rotary?"  Rotarians provide community service to both local and international communities. This is perhaps the best reason perhaps for becoming a Rotarian: the chance to do something for somebody else and to sense the self-fulfillment that comes in the process and the return of that satisfaction to one's own life.

A THANK-YOU FROM GRACE.   President Jill circulated a sweet thank-you note from our newest honorary member Grace Van Well.

LUNCHES AT MEETINGS.  Lunches are now discontinued based on a survey over the past week, and the fact that lunches have not been self-sustaining.
Another option when meeting at Pybus is to utilize the Pybus restaurants where food can be ordered ahead of the meeting.  Click here for info...  Pybus Merchants – Pybus Public Market

UPCOMING EVENTS.    District Conference 2023, May 18-21
Volunteers are needed to help with various activities during the conference.  Contact Conference Chair Colin Brine
Also, read the recent published article by Rufus Woods here.

PP Pete Van Well needs a few more volunteers to work the Polio Plus booth at the Expo Village outside Leavenworth’s Festhalle during the District 5060 Conference May 19 through 21. Volunteers do NOT need to attend the conference to help out at the booth. We need two Rotarians for two hour shifts on Saturday May 20, and Sunday
We have 8 volunteers already committed. Questions?  Call Pete Van Well at 509-679-5214.
The District is launching a HUGE new initiative in Rotary’s fight to end Polio, a fight that has its very roots in Wenatchee Rotary. Oh, and there will be snacks.  Email Pete at pete2@vanwell.net or call at 509-679-5214 to volunteer. Thanks.

SERVICE PROJECT OPPORTUNITIES.  Town Toyota Concessions
Town Toyota Center Volunteers-
There is a huge demand for volunteers this weekend to help with the concession stands at the Town Toyota Center Rodeo "Hell on Hooves" (Fri & Sat) as well as the Gran Jaripeo Baile (on Sun).
If you do not have a MAST or Food Handler's Card, it's ok. We will work around that and staff appropriately, sprinkling those who do have the permits to work with those who do not.

This is a good opportunity to raise money, have fun and also entertain family. (* Bonus: We can also get free tickets for anyone who volunteers so they could go one night with their family and work another time.)

May 5 - 1 shift:  5:00 PM to 10:00 PM- Rodeo

May 6 - 1 shift: 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM - Rodeo

Lexar Homes presents “Hell on Hooves” a Rough Stock Rodeo on Friday, May 5th and Saturday, May 6th inside the Town Toyota Center. Each night will consist of Barrel Racing, Bullriding, Saddlebronc riding, and Cowboy Bull poker!

May 7 - 2 shifts: 12:00-5:00 PM  & 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM

Gran Jaripeo Baile has become one of the top Dance/Electronica artists in the 2023 music scene, delighting fans with a unique Dance/Electronica sound.
To sign up, contact Wendy Dalpez, wdalpez@esourcecoach.com or Rob Tidd rtidd@corpoffices.org.

Plant Powered Potluck.

Thursday, May 11th - Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group.

Doors open at 5:30 pm for appetizers and drinks, with dinner beginning at 6 pm.  Join us for our monthly plant-based potluck at the YWCA's Women's Empowerment Center on May 11th! This is a great way to learn about the variety of foods available, try new foods, and share recipes and tips.

Curious about plant-based cheese options? This month we will be sampling locally available plant-based cheeses. Learn about the different brands, which ones are best for melting, eating on their own, and decide which ones you think taste the best.

We do have access to a refrigerator, stove and oven to heat things up. Plates, cups, and utensils are available onsite. Bring your favorite beverage – beer and wine are ok.  Please RSVP and indicate if you can bring an appetizer, main dish, side dish or dessert. Unsure what to bring? Chips/salsa, pita chips/hummus, salads, and plant-based ice creams are easy solutions. Want some more inspiration, check out this site for recipes: Vegan Recipes | Plant-based Cooking | Veganuary

Please use this sign-up sheet to share what you will bring: May Potluck Sign-Up

From RI.  Members of the Rotary Club of Kaka‘ako Eco, Hawaii, tossed 5,000 mud balls filled with beneficial organisms into the Ala Wai Canal in Waikiki as part of a rehabilitation effort to make the waterway fishable and swimmable. The healthy bacteria in the genki balls — made with soil, molasses, rice bran, and water — digest and oxygenate sludge at the bottom of the canal (genki means healthy in Japanese). In March 2022, more than 200 volunteers, including club members and friends, made the balls, advised by the Genki Ala Wai Project. Three weeks later, they threw the fermented genki balls into the waterway. Donors paid $5 per ball to defray some of the cost. “A lot of kids came out and we had canoes come through the canal to help throw the balls,” says Club President Jenny Do. “We blew the air horn and then hundreds of balls just went into the Ala Wai Canal.”
