THIS WEEK - AUGUST 26, 2021
  Microsoft, With Linda Karstetter
   (ZOOM #71, Hybrid # 20)

Lisa works for Microsoft TechSpark in Quincy, and is the Manager/DCCD Community Lead.  She has been with Microsoft since December 2017.  Prior to Microsoft she was the Senior Manager, Community Relations Strategy with Yahoo! Inc. from 2007-2017.
Lisa is the daughter of a potato farmer and married to an orchardist.  When she moved away to college, she swore that she would never move back to rural life.  She lives a little over an hour from where she grew up.  She will tell you that the farm is a great place to raise kids.  She and Kent raised three boys and two of them moved back after college to join the family farm.
Lisa loves the small-town values, the tight relationships, and living in a community where everyone needs to lean in to make it work. She knows that is hard for people in bigger urban areas to really grasp, but she wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Having a connection to most people around the area is what makes it so much fun to do the work that they're doing through TechSpark. It has impact on organizations and people that she personally knows. That touches her heart and makes the work she does very personal.

WEEK IN REVIEW - AUGUST 19, 2021
  ZOOM #70, Hybrid # 19
Rotary Auction Kickoff
"For the Kids" , With Pete and Mike
  1. ZOOM VIDEO HERE  (pardon sound problems)
  2. ZOOM videos are only available 2-3 weeks
  3. Previous APPLESEED (Aug 19).
Past presidents and Auction co-chairs Mike Kintner and Pete Van Well led a rousing kickoff of the auction season by hosting a pleasant outdoor social gathering at the Hilton Garden Inn patio on Wednesday evening where more than $3K was raised for the pre-game batting practice.
They then began the regular Thursday noon program by leading the attendees in a lively rendition of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" and reminding us that the big January 29 event has an audacious goal of netting $150K "For the Kids".  The interim league president was named as Jumpin' Jill Leonard.   President Alice was allowed the awesome responsibility of throwing the first pitch (to hapless catcher, secretary Frank).  Adding spice to the game, Co-chair Pete has committed to perform breathtaking feats based on what amount the club raises (4th inning below).
Using the competitive theme of big-league baseball, all members were divided into 3 Divisions of 3 teams each.

SPRINGWATER (North) ORCHARD (Central) RED APPLE (South)
Charlotte Knights Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs St. Paul Saints
Sugarland Skeeters Albuquerque Isotopes Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp
Reno Aces El Paso Chihuahuas Tacoma Rainiers

FIRST INNING:   Naming the non-profit recipients including CASA, represented by two guests Heather Baker and Arlene Grover, of CASA.

SECOND INNING:  PLAY BALL
With the first pitch fired in by President Alice Thursday, the Wenatchee Rotary League started out strong in its efforts to raise $150,000 net “For the Kids”, our big fundraiser to help Campfire, YWCA, CASA and the Wenatchee Rotary Foundation’s Scholarship Fund!
The preseason/kickoff promotion, “What’s Pete Gonna Do?” is turning into a huge success garnering $8,700 so far, assuring Triple P will be tasked with a number of various endeavors (seven and counting)!
Captain Joe St. Jean and his Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (Red Apple Division) jumped in the lead raising a whopping $3,800 in combined promotion, sponsorship and procurement donations. But those pugilistic prawns better watch their backs as rookie Captain Ricardo Iniguez and his Reno Aces (Springwater Division) are right on their heels with $3,675 pledged. It looks like veteran Chuck Jinneman is the Aces’ go-to player.  Also in the mix is Orchard Division’s Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs, where Captain Phil “Razzle Dazzle” Rasmussen and company are on the board with an impressive $3,530 (and that with All Star Leonard Singhose still in the dugout)!
Speaking of the Orchard Division, GM Mike Kintner gets bragging rights this week with a combined total of $6,555, besting Red Apple and Springwater divisions which scored $6,400 and $5,575 respectively
But with bats firing for all teams in all divisions, it looks like a winning season “For the Kids”! The standings are as follows:

Orchard (Central) Division     $6,555
Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs          $3,530
Albuquerque Isotopes            $1,775
Santa Fe Chihuahuas            $1,000
Red Apple (South) Division    $6,400
Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp   $3,800
Tacoma Rainiers                    $2,300
St. Paul Saints                       $300
Springwater (North) Division  $5,575
Reno Aces                             $3,675  *
Sugarland Skeeters               $1,150
Springwater Knights              $750

*  After a review, it seems there was an unintended error (on the part of our statistician). A big score from Sue Rose launches the Aces, and subsequently the Springwater Division, to the top of our tally.  See next week’s stats for more!

THIRD INNING:   Brainstorming ideas for procurement.  Lots of great ideas were voiced.

FOURTH INNING:  WHAT WILL PETE DO?   To kick off the auction we a holding a promotion to raise seed money. The promotion centers around the question, What’s Pete Gonna Do? Pete is willing to perform a list of crazy things. The more money pledged, the more and crazier the tasks will be. Right now, we raised enough in pledges that seven endeavors await Pete. Will he take a Polar Bear plunge? Eat a plate of liver and onions? Perhaps roll around in Jello? At the end of the promotion in September, he may have to do all this and more! Plus donations of $1,000 by an individual allows that person to add a task of his or her choosing!  To make a pledge, contact Pete HERE.  In photo, Mike enumerates, as Jill displays the chart.

FIFTH INNING:  Get involved, join the team, buy tickets, sponsor tables, procure great auction items!  Lets play ball "For the Kids"!  Storage locations for procurement items will be announced.

---  DEAR APPLESAUCE  ---

Dear Applesauce:  What will it take to get the average age of the club under 40?
      From:   Curious Cat

Dear Cat.  In the words of the late, great Aleah: “Age ain’t nothin’ but a number.” Why do we need more young people when we have great Rotarians like Chuck Jinneman and Gene Anderson? Dear Applesauce remembers a time at Rotary Park when Mr. Jinneman and Mr. Anderson were down at the bottom of a drain trying to patch weed mat while a gaggle of younger men stood around like lemmings. So hats off to our great generation…forever young and putting the rest of us shame!

Dear Applesauce:  Does Jill Leonard ever sleep?"
      From: Curious on Castlerock.

"Dear Curious: The short answer is no.  However, Applesauce is suspicious that Jill may have several clones.  How else would one explain her ability to run Zoom sessions, the Public Relations Committee, Women in Rotary, and be President Elect all at the same time?  And to top it all off, now she is League President of our Rotary Auction Teams and has to be in charge of leading Co-chairs Mike and Pete around by the nose!  That in and of itself is enough to wear out even the hardiest of souls.  No, there simply must be more than one of her!

To see last week's wise answers by Dear Applesauce, visit the Appleseed HERE and scroll to the bottom of the page, where this frivolity will likely appear in future editions.
