PROGRAM JANUARY 03 - AUCTION PLANNING WITH JILL LEONARD

Reflections of the Past; Visions of the Future!

Happy New Year!    2019 brings a clean slate to make dreams happen, change lives, and shape a community.  Let's not forget or erase the past but reflect and celebrate how far we have come. This rings true not only on a personal level but as a change maker in the community. Yes that's YOU I'm talking about.

This Thursday we will share success stories of what our club has achieved with its fundraising efforts.  We will showcase the projects in the upcoming year. Each year we set high goals and change lives: whether it is grants, donations or sweat equity.  We embody the Service Above Self motto.

Come join us as we ring in the new year and celebrate how amazing the Wenatchee Rotary Club has been for almost 100 years!

Jill Leonard

WEEK IN REVIEW, Dec. 27 - Peace Corps/Interact w/Kelsi Finney
President Pete opened the meeting with announcements listed below.
Susan Albert, club and district Interact committee chair, introduced Kelsi who spoke passionately of her 3 years on one of Tonga's remote islands, Ha'apai/Ha'ano, as a Peace Corps Volunteer English teacher and NEMO writer.  She is enjoying being back home where she likes 3 hot showers some days!
For overview, see Kelsi's PowerPoint (with photos) here.  Listen to audio of Kelsi's talk .  It was fascinating.
Intro from last week's Appleseed.
Kelsi is sponsored by Susan Albert, and is the Peace Corp volunteer from Tonga.  She put out a request for Children's books to help teach her students to read.  the Interact Club collected 100 pounds of books and sent them to Tonga.  We ended up sending them with a real person as it was cheaper and safer to do so, arriving week of September 20 (for that story see Appleseed).
She used them to create her tiny HA’ANO LIBRARY.  We had a relationship with the Rotary of Tonga who accepted the books so that we did not have to pay duty.  It was quite a ride, as the school where Kelsi is working is on an outer remote island.
Kelsi provided this bio sketch.  "I am a Washington native, born and raised in Shelton and moved around the west coast of Washington, attending UW with an undergraduate degree in Arts, Media and Culture and a masters in education (specializing in English Language Leaners). I have taught 2nd and 4th grade and was an art teacher and joined Peace Corps in 2016 as an English Language Facilitator.  I taught English on a remote island in Tonga (south pacific) for two years with no electricity or running water. I extended for a third year to work with NEMO (national emergency management office) to write and illustrate children's books on how to survive a tsunami, earthquake and cyclone in the South Pacific. I also work with a local Eco-committee (Ha'apai Environmental Protection Agency)  that addresses environmental issues related to glass, and plastic waste."

In photos below, Susan chats with Kelsi during lunch.  Pete and Laurie Flarity-White during lunch; Laurie also works with Interact.  Two views of Kelsi giving her talk.  A fan made by the natives of her island (one of two given to the club).  A touching thank-you note from Kelsi's Tongan students.

End Polio Now/Club 60:
Our ambitious goal has been set by President Pete at $10,000 ($192 per week!).
We continue our 10-year relationship with the Gates Foundation; since 2013, they have matched each dollar with $2 toward polio eradication.
Donations by club members on Dec. 27 = $27.95 bringing our total to $1299 or $3897 with the Gates match.  This equates to 6508 lives saved. Collections at KPQ were $1133.  Read about World Polio Day, October 24
