WEEK IN REVIEW, October 18 - Port of Chelan w/Rory Turner
President Pete opened the meeting declaring Wenatchee Rotary the Da Vinchi of service clubs, and the Michelangelo of Rotary clubs.   First item on the agenda was to induct a new member, Ashley Gillum, Director of Program Development at CWU.  She was sponsored and introduced by Laurel Turner.  The charge will be given at a later date.
Grampa Gil Sparks introduced our speaker Rory Turner, one of 3 commissioners for the Port of Chelan County .  Listen to Audio .   Click here to view Rory's PowerPoint.
Ironically, Rory was extensively quoted this morning in a front-page story in the Wenatchee World, regarding the fate of the historic Horan House.
Today, it was more to do with the fate, history, and mission of the Port of Chelan, formed in 1958.   In his PowerPoint, he displayed photos from some of the early days.  There are 75 ports in the state.  The original ambitious mission here was "to do all things necessary and proper to promote the extension of barge traffic to Rock Island and beyond to prepare for the development of water transportation and recreation facilities and promote, develop, and encourage the industrial development of Chelan County."  But it did not happen because of the dams.
He mentioned the background of the other commissioners, and described the current activities of the commission.  Their 3 lines of business include a real estate portfolio, an associate development organization (ADO), and they co-own and operate Pangborn Airport.  He discussed the cleanup of Cashmere Mill District and bringing in new businesses there.  He explained how a new website tool is used for developers to research county properties and many other planning initiatives, including the Pybus tech center.
He encouraged attendance at the Port Partner Breakfasts, which happen 3 times each year and are free.
He covered the complications of the Pangborn Airport, and complimented the management for completing the runway extension.  He described the shrinking number of U.S. airlines, and the serious pilot shortage resulting from recent legislation.  There are also severe operating costs and capital  budget issues.

A note from Laurel.  Rory was very pleased to speak today and he and I both felt that the club was kind and attentive during his talk.  He was particularly touched when you presented him with the certificate of the clubs donation to polio plus in his honor.  Rory's mother suffered from polio between her second and third child.  Rory was number three and she always called him her miracle baby....which I remind him often not to let go to his head :-)

On a sad note, however, as Rory and I were leaving the meeting in separate cars he received a call that his older and only brother, Rob, had passed away.  Rob was an Army Vietnam Veteran and has suffered from Parkinson's Disease for years but was lately in good spirits but was having to be heavily medicated which led to some difficult side effects.  I would like to request that the club members hold Rory (and the rest of the Turner family) up in your thoughts and prayers.  This is new territory for both of us as Rob was the first sibling either of us has lost.

Again thank you for your invitation for Rory to speak.  He is a true believer in communication and community.

Pete's Good News story (2 mins)

         ANNOUNCEMENTS

Gil Sparks noted the upcoming funeral for Suzie Kiesz, wife of former member Bob Kiesz, a member for 22 years, who left the club in 2005.  It will be at First United Methodist Church, 941 Washington St., Wenatchee, 2:00 p.m., on Friday, October 26, 2018.  Read her obituary here.
President Pete reminded us of all the important events listed in the calendar.  Three members of the auction committee spoke about sponsors and procurements.  All members are considered to be on the committee.  Gary Provo gave handouts listing all members, and contact info.  Dan Maher explained donor planning.  Garry Sparks spoke about sponsors, and mentioned that Confluence Health has agreed to be our presenting sponsor at $5K.  The big need is for 35 table sponsors at $600.
Pete says new members should plan to attend new-member breakfast Tuesday morning, and also the Polio events of Wednesday 10/24.  Next Thursday, Mike Kintner will preside.  Friday, don't miss the Trick-or-Treat social at the home of Joe St. Jean.
Tom Everly reminded us that Saturday, 10/27 will be our Make-A-Difference Day project at Camp Zanika.  And more events are coming in November and December.
Carmen Bossenbrock will be returning home soon from Regency; volunteers are sought to assist her in attending meetings.  Meantime she loves visitors.  We miss her, AND her photos.
President Pete's Good News of the day was a heart-warming story about Steve's Pizza in Indianapolis.   LISTEN  to audio.

Our ambitious goal has been set by President Pete at $10,000 ($192 per week!).
We continue our 10-year relationship with the Gates Foundation; since 2013, they have matched each dollar with $2 toward polio eradication.
Donations by club members on Oct. 18 = $52.57 thus bringing our total $831 or $2493 with the Gates match.  This equates to 4163 lives saved. Read about World Polio Day, October 24
