MARCH 21 - SHELTER IN A BOX
with Garn Christensen
July 18, 2018, East Wenatchee Rotarian and volunteer for ShelterBox International Disaster Relief Garn Christensen opened his deployment availability calendar through August 18, 2018. The next day, he received an email asking if he could be in Nairobi, Kenya to respond to massive flooding in Eastern Kenya causing hundreds of thousands to lose their homes. With help from local health officials and Rotarians, he flew out of Wenatchee the morning of July 23rd.
His presentation will share information on this assignment as well as Rotary Partner ShelterBox International.
Our speaker was sponsored and introduced by the seemingly ubiquitous Gil Sparks, who noted the irony that the Wenatchee World had an article today on this very topic (unfortunately not linked on their website). Patrick used an effective PowerPoint to illustrate his program. Listen to the audio here. He explained that the Cascadia Conservation District is a non-regulatory organization dedicated to encouraging the wise stewardship and conservation of all natural resources in Chelan County. The board and staff members work cooperatively with local landowners and communities to provide technical and financial assistance for soil, water, forest, fish, and wildlife conservation efforts, serving all of Chelan County.
He highlighted the fact that we live in a fire-adapted ecosystem. He works with many entities and groups to provide education and help to reduce wildfire risks. he will come and speak to any community group on the topic. He displayed maps and statistics of our wildfire history. He noted that Wenatchee fire risk is in the top 5 in the Pacific NW and described many ways CCD can help us to be a more fire-adapted community.
Roving wood-chipper crew to assist individuals or neighborhoods.

Pete encouraged all committees to be seeking new members. A new-member orientation is being planned.
President Pete opened the meeting of the "Dutch Apple Ala Mode" of Rotary clubs. After welcoming several guests and our newest member, Pete made or allowed the announcements below.

End Polio Now/Club 60: Our ambitious goal has been set by President Pete at $10,000 ($192 per week!). On March 14, donations by club members to the Club 60 cups was $464 (which includes a $200 match by an anonymous donor),bringing our total to $2,138. Combined with other member donations by other means of $6,630 brings our total to $7,094, or $21,282with the Gates match! This equates to 35,540 lives potentially saved!
$7,094
Note: We continue our 10-year relationship with the Gates Foundation. Since 2013, they have matched each dollar with $2 toward polio eradication. Collections at KPQ on Polio Day were $1,133. Read about 2018 World Polio Day, October 24
