JUNE 27 - END OF YEAR TRANSFER OF POWER
AKA Presidential Roast
End of Year, Peaceful Transfer of Power, Presidential Roast/Recognition/Tribute, Installation of officers. These are some of the names traditionally assigned to the final meeting of the Rotary year as we transfer the leadership reins.
As we enjoy the last meeting that President Pete will preside over this week, be sure to be here for his send off next week. How many superlative names for our club can we pack into one meeting? And what will be the penultimate "good news" of the year - that Pete's reign is over and he hands off the gavel to President Elect, soon to be President Mike? Don't miss the laughs and fun of this transition meeting - sure to entertain!
NO MEETING JULY 4
WEEK IN REVIEW - June 13, 2019
HANWASH in Haiti
Carin Smith used handouts and a PowerPoint to give a brief overview of the Rotary HANWASH Program, and our involvement with it. HANWASH is an acronym meaning "TheHaitiNational CleanWater,Sanitation &Health Strategy". In 2019 the club committed to become a "Champion" of one of the first four pilot projects organized by this group, which will be in the town ofFerrier, near Milot (where we have been sponsoring a local clean water initiative). This is an exciting and innovative District-Wide Project, and we welcome other clubs to become involved, helping to bring clean potable water to all of Haiti by 2030.
One of Carin's handouts was a copy of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) reflecting an international agreement between all of the parties involved.
The World Service Committee welcomes new members! Contact Bill Murray to work with the Milot project subcommittee (transferring control to the community of Milot) or Carin Smith to work with the HANWASH subcommittee.
STOP THE BLEED with Doug Sklar
Douglas Sklaris a two-time past president of the Okanogan-Omak Rotary Club and has been a Rotarian since 1992. In his free time he is the chair of the Club’s initiative to train 1,000 people in CPR, how to use an AED, and how to ‘Stop the Bleed’. Read more bio in last week's Appleseed.
Doug became interested in the issue of saving heart-attack victims after he suffered one last October 29, learning that survival rates increase dramatically when first aid is given quickly. Doug gave an informative and engaging talk. Listen here to audio of Doug's talk.
His club has made a big commitment to train 1,000 people in CPR and in the use of AED devices (Automated External Defibrillator), and how to Stop the Bleed which is a "national awareness campaign and call to action intended to cultivate grassroots efforts that encourage bystanders to become trained, equipped and empowered to stop a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives". He stated that one is 60-times more likely to need an AED than a fire extinguisher. His brochure states "This $100,000 commitment to our community over the next two years will only be achieved with your support. Each $35.00 donation will pay for one community member to receive training in CPR, AED and Stop the bleed."
They have successfully partnered with Lifeline Ambulance Service, who gives the classes, and agrees to routinely maintain all of the AED devices placed around the community by Rotary.
Training classes are provided locally in OMAK at a discounted price by Lifeline on a weekly basis. Their Wenatchee website lists nominal prices for these regular classes. They are raising funds and have received a Rotary grant. Doug expressed 3 "ASKS".
He strongly suggests training classes (no law against ending with beer and pizza)
Their small club has taken on a big commitment; they need help
That all clubs make a similar commitment locally, even if on a smaller level.
NOTE: There is NO AED in the Red Lion.
