This week's News and Announcements.
IMAGINE ROTARY MOMENTSWomen’s History Month. In 1987 Women were officially invited to join Rotary. To many of us, we don’t understand what it was like to not be able to attend based on our gender. Judy Conner became the club's first female member and served as president (1994-1995). I don’t believe Judy joined to be the first, but for her desire to make an impact in our community. We all know she is a force to be reckoned with. (All the seasoned Attorneys can attest to that). Since then, we have had 6 women lead this club (7 if you count myself). We currently have 35 female members, and 60 Male. And, we have the first woman, Jennifer Jones, to serve as Rotary International president.
I don’t say this to throw anyone under the bus or point a finger at the past. It helps confirm my Imagine Rotary ideals. Imagine a world where everyone had a place to feel welcome, accepted and could make an impact! That is what Rotary is about. We are the Peace Builders, change makers and always eager to make an impact in the world around us.
As a woman, I want to thank those who paved the path! I am honored to stand among your ranks in the Wenatchee Rotary History books. Judy Connor, Mall Boyd, Sue Rose, June Darling, Brenda Abney, and Alice Meyer! Your influence has shaped me.
UPCOMING EVENTS.
March 11 -Toast and Roast, March 11.Last call for tickets. This is shaping up to be a fabulous event. To make this event the best it can be, we need some volunteers to help with the event. Get volunteer opportunity descriptions and sign up here.
Thank you to our sponsors-
March 16-
Bring your spouse/partner/guest to Rotary meeting. Everyone is encouraged to wear green. What a wonderful opportunity to share Rotary with our loved ones and colleagues.
FUND-RAISING/SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES. We will be running the Grill Zone concessions at the Town Toyota Center (TTC) on March 17-19. This is the perfect way to share the fun of Rotary, hang out with some cool people, and make some money for the club. A portion of the proceeds of the concessions will come directly back to the club. These funds are part of the Community Outreach budget. This committee provides grants to organizations in our community. The application date opens in spring! We need 5 people each date.
March 17-18 are Wenatchee Wild Hockey games, and March 19 is the Bighorn Basketball game.
It is recommended you acquire a Food Handler permit, and MAST (Mandatory Alcohol Server Training) permit. Once completed, please bring a copy for Confluence Rotary President, Wendy Dalpez the day of your shift.
SPECIAL OLYMPICS. As promised, Grace Van Well proudly lit the Special Olympics Torch, as thousands looked on. And we are all proud of Grace. Read Wenatchee World story here.
ENVIRONMENTAL NEWS. The Environmental Committee call for volunteers to man the April 30 Youth Day recycling and composting "man-the-bins" effort.
Folks can respond to either me or Kris Cameron of Confluence Rotary. Here are links to sign up to help staff our Rotary Booth for the Earth Fair (4/22) and Apple Blossom Youth Day (4/30). No special knowledge is required. Thanks for sharing this with your members. (From Natalie & Kris)
GLASS RECYCLING. Save your wine bottles and other glass. One of our members is planning a trip to the Chelan Rotary Recycle Center in the next few weeks. More later.
F.I.N.E.S - PP Kory Kalahar announced that he has been named interim Wenatchee School Superintendent.
Rachel Evey thanked all members who attended the recent fundraiser for WVC Foundation: 'Drink Beer, Do Good' at the Tap Room of Hellbent Brewery in Pybus.
It was good to see PP Tom McNair again, as he visited to promote the Wenatchee Symphony concert on Saturday night.
WENATCHEE ROTARY FOUNDATION (WRF) NEWS. WRF is seeking candidates for an open board position to be selected in May. More info will be in the Appleseed soon.
Our Youth Exchange student Rosario attended the "Weekend in Merritt, BC" with inbound and outbound students.
From District RYE Committee: The Rotary club in Merritt did an amazing job hosting the kids. They planned activities like snowshoeing, ice fishing, and curling. They organized a delicious fry bread dinner at the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology, where we also learned about traditional medicine, drumming, and dance. Most of all, the kids loved being together!
A huge thank you to all the Wenatchee clubs for supporting the Youth Exchange Program!
President Jill: By my estimates, the Wenatchee Rotary Club has spent over $100,000 on Youth Exchange. This is the true path to peacebuilding. When we take time to understand each other, we can find the common ground to work together.
