This week : District Governor Annual Visit
With DG Richard DeRock
We are honored to once again enjoy a visit from Governor DeRock, now beginning his second year as governor and initiating his visitation of all 58 active clubs. Richard is a member of Wenatchee Confluence RC, and a former member of our club, along with wife Robin. You can read his interesting bio and hopes for the coming year on the district 5060 web site HERE. He agreed to the unusual arrangement of a second term because the COVID pandemic prevented his performing all of the normal expected duties of a district governor in 2020-21.

WEEK IN REVIEW - July 08, 2021 (ZOOM #64, Hybrid #13)
Previous APPLESEED(July 08), includes speaker's bio.
The hybrid meeting was opened and led by new president Alice Meyer.
Dr. Hosey was introduced by her sponsor and colleague, Rachel Evey.
Dr. Kristen Hosey has been working as the vaccine coordinator for Chelan Douglas Health District since late January 2021. She discussed her role and how it has evolved over the last 6 months as the COVID-19 vaccine supply and demand has changed this year. She described some of her recent international activities (Africa) as well as her work at WVC as full-time faculty in the nursing program, all of which was especially challenging due to COVID restrictions. She also spoke about her new COVID puppy!
The distribution of COVID vaccines (and PPE) has been challenging, and is the largest logistics effort in the world since WWII. She outlined some of the details. She discussed coordination teams, planning and partners involved in the Chelan region, especially Confluence Health, Town Toyota Center, Safeway, and Walgreens pharmacies.
Reaching the state's goal of 70% participation has been difficult, but we are getting closer, particularly in the younger age groups. Vaccines are available to all people age 12 and above.
Some of her images appear below. All of her statistical info is available on the state health department website, especially the data dashboard HERE.
Most of the current hospitalized patients are either un-vaccinated or immuno-compromised, where the vaccine does not provide adequate protection. Also the new COVID variants may require additional doses for those already vaccinated. Dr. Hosey was assisted by her colleague Luke Davies.
Tragedy in BC, help needed. Andrea Inwards, Rotarian and past Assistant Governor in Merritt is leading a joint effort by our District and our friends in District 5040. The village of Lytton was devastated by wildfire during the recent heat wave, leaving many people homeless and taking refuge in nearby cities. Though Lytton is not in District 5060, the evacuees are being housed in District 5060 club towns. Local Rotary clubs are helping out with donations, but additional assistance is sought throughout our district. Send donations to our treasurer Allan Galbraith at our club address, PO Box 1723, Wenatchee 98807-1723 or make a donation through our club website HERE . Login required.

WOMEN OF ROTARY. Tuesday July 13, 5:30 PM at Hilton Garden Inn.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Michelle Shermer asks: "We need as many volunteers as we can get this Thursday afternoon to pack up and bring food and other supplies to the Migrant Farmworkers' Camp in Monitor. We're planning on meeting in the parking lot of First United Methodist Church in Wenatchee at 2:45 pm. We'll load up our cars, head to the camp, set up and probably be done before 4:30pm. There are 250 people and about 25 children expecting us, and Laurie and I really need some hands-on help!"
NEXT WEEK. Hybrid meeting at Pybus with District Governor Richard DeRock, beginning his second year. Read about his vision on the D5060 web site HERE.
Farmer's Market Takeover. Sunrise Rotary is again performing this community service; next event - July 17. To join in, contact Alice Meyer, or Kathleen Mcnalty if you can donate one hour. It is lots of fun.
HAITI HANWASH UPDATE. In spite of increasing political chaos in Haiti, HANWASH moves forward unimpeded, according to Dr. Carin Smith. See story below.
BIKE RIDE. Jay Smith and wife Debbie will be hosting a leisure bike ride July 29th at 5:30 PM. Details to follow.
