Joyful Scholars Montessori  is Wenatchee's only pre-K/adolescent school, providing "a holistic year-round education in the Montessori tradition, empowering students to use sound judgement, evaluate and understand the world around them, and be well-informed, contributing citizens."
Cara Hackenmiller is director of this nonprofit toddler-high school program in Cashmere and Wenatchee.   Cara began with the history of Montessori education, named for its pioneering founder Maria Montessori (1870 - 1952), a graduate of Rome U. medical school in 1896, she became the first female physician in Italy, after deciding against engineering.  She focused on childhood education for kids with learning disabilities and helped to start the idea of "Children's House" education.  She was nominated six times for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1949 -1952.
Cara further explained the concept of the approach, including how the teacher follows and observes the child's interests and development and models and promotes peace.  They always honor the child, allowing them a degree of independence in choosing their direction of learning, while enforcing study plans.  Students are "fiercely independent"  They are taught to respect their environment and asked to "do hard things".  She displayed a photo of the typical classroom and explained some features of a typical day, such as the 3-hour uninterrupted work period.  They operate on a 3-year cycle (e.g. ages 3-6, 6-9, 9-12, 12-15 etc.) giving them periods of  introduction, practice, and leadership.
They work with Humane Society with their "reading to the animals" program and spend a lot of time on social skills and wellness activities.
Cara hopes to expand their program soon.
