   PROGRAM JANUARY 17 - APPLE STEM NETWORK/GWATA
with Dr. Sue Kane & Becca Freimuth (website )
Apple STEM Co-directors
Dr. Kane and Jenny Rojanasthien

NCESD’s Dr. Sue Kane, co-director of the Apple STEM Network, with support from GWATA’s Becca Freimuth, will outline the shared vision and enthusiasm the Apple STEM Network provides to clear a pathway and secure resources for North Central Washington students to build STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) fluency, helping to open the door to new opportunities and career connections, and stimulating the economic development in our region. Apple STEM Network was established in 2015, and is co-led by the Greater Wenatchee Area Technology Alliance (GWATA) and the North Central Education Service District (NCESD). They serve 26 school districts located in the four counties of North Central Washington: Chelan, Douglas, Grant and Okanagan.

Apple STEM has 3 big goals for their collective impact:

  1. Inspire youth through career-connected STEM learning opportunities.
  2. Prepare our regional youth for the future by increasing attainment of post-secondary credentials and four-year degrees and contribute to Washington State’s 70% attainment goal.
  3. Raise public awareness and support for STEM.
More can be learned at http://www.applestemnetwork.org/ .

Photos below show students participating in local Apple STEM-driven events.

WEEK IN REVIEW, January 10 - Wenatchee Valley TREAD
President Pete opened the meeting with announcements listed below.  He introduced new County Commissioner (and club member) Bob Bugert. who introduced our speaker Mat Lyons.   Mat has a remarkable background.  He was formally Lee Elem. School principal, then Special Ed. Director for Eastmont School District. He has been a leader of the statewide Evergreen Mountain Bike Association.    This non-profit program concerns the formation of a regional trail/recreation entity which came out of the "Our Valley/Our Future" program, as the first one of 6-8 game changer initiatives.
Mat explained that TREAD stands for "Trails, Recreation, Education, Advocacy & Development".   Any place you recreate on is a "trail" (running, cycling, hiking, riding, boating, fishing, swimming, etc.).  He used an informative PowerPoint to explain the topic and to identify the mission and leadership of the organization.  One of the main drivers for this initiative is economic development.

Its primary mission is to advocate for recreation in the Wenatchee Valley through:
•Education
•Communication
•Facilitation and Collaboration
•Planning and Execution
•Leverage recreation improving the quality of life and health in the region
•Develop recreation-based economies as part of a strong and diverse economic mix that supports this region
Beginning about one year ago with no funds, Confluence Health has made an initial funding pledge for 5 years.  It has since partnered with the Chamber, the counties and the ports.  Budget is expected to be about $130K per year.  They are seeking donations and grants.  They have consulted with other non-profits.  Mat will lead the group for about 6 months, and hopes to represent all other local recreation groups; he would love for Rotary to be involved.  Next quarterly ex-officio meeting will be February 26, 5-7PM at CTC center.  Mat answered many questions.
To hear audio of Mat's presentation (including the interesting Q&A session), click here .
President Pete thanked Mat and suggested he consider the well-worn trail from his easy chair to the refrigerator.

       ANNOUNCEMENTS

President Pete opened the meeting of the "Hound Dog and Love Me Tender"  of Rotary Clubs (in honor of "The King", Elvis Presley, who would be 84 this week).  He also  Introduced Tamara Burns at the head table
1.  Auction.   Heidi Myers promoted the Auction, which is in two weeks.  We are at about 115 guests, far short of the goal for guests of about 325-350).  We also need names and meal preference. Click here to listen to Heidi's passionate appeal, including Pete's comments.  Deservedly, Heidi drew the winning black marble after husband Don held the winning raffle ticket (especially deserved since Don donated an iPad to the Haiti project).  Pete asked for volunteers to fill jobs identified by Jill Leonard (listed above).   Dawn Davies volunteered to help with silent auction setup.  Proof-reader volunteers were Carin Smith, Loren Stach, and Joe St. jean.  He also suggested we ask for cash donations.
2.   Pete mentioned the District Conference in Kamloops, coming on the first weekend in May.  Pete is going on Thursday and offers rides.
3.   District Conference 2021 is here in Wenatchee under president DeRock who hopes to make this one unique.  The committee is already at work, chaired by Rob Tidd and PDG Jim Adamson.  Pete wants us to coordinate Home Hosting.  More later.
4.  District PI Grant - Peace Pole at Rotary Park - there is a meeting tonight.
5.  Ashley Gillum won the trivia contest, and chose free brags as her prize.  Taking immediate advantage, she announced the CWU Day with Mission Ridge on March 9.
6.   Carmen is at home and has sent her Auction donation.  She is dropping all connections except Rotary.
7.  Pete mentioned the 100th birthday of Ed Cadman this week, as mentioned in the Wenatchee World today.  Pete claimed that all Capricorns are great people, especially "The King".  Pete's Good News concerned the 84th birthday this week of Elvis, "The King", the  best-selling solo artist in the history of recorded music.
8.  President Pete will promote the auction on Wake Up Wenatchee Tuesday AM; show begins at 7 AM (Spectrum 19, Local Tel 12).

End Polio Now/Club 60:
Our ambitious goal has been set by President Pete at $10,000 ($192 per week!).
We continue our 10-year relationship with the Gates Foundation; since 2013, they have matched each dollar with $2 toward polio eradication.
Donations by club members on Jan. 10 = $18.30 bringing our total to $1344 or $4030 with the Gates match.  This equates to 6730 lives saved. Collections at KPQ were $1133.  Read about World Polio Day, October 24
