WEEK IN REVIEW, 7/19/18 - Justice Steven Gonzalez
Washington Supreme Court
Justice Steven Gonzalez was sponsored and introduced by attorney and member Russ Spiedel, who related an anecdote about the justice's successful prosecution of a terrorist several years ago, and mentioned some awards he received. The Justice spoke articulately (and with a sense of humor) at our meeting today about his life, family, and his experience in Washington state courts, especially his last 6 years on the Supreme Court, preceded by a few years on King County Superior Court. For details visit hisSupreme Court web page .
He stated that he owes a debt of gratitude to Rotary International which awarded him a 21-month scholarship to study in Japan & China.
He grew up in S. California, and was first in his family to attend college. His first application was accidentally to Scripps College in Claremont, CA, which turned out to be for women only (after that his first question would be "Are you co-ed?" LISTEN TO AUDIO
He likes reporting for work at the "Temple of Justice" so that he can tell his Jewish mother he "went to the temple."
He gave a good comparison of the state and federal constitutions, and encouraged us to read them, especially the preamble to the former. Washington State Constitution
His overview of each section was fascinating and he quizzed his audience with some simple questions to test our knowledge of the court system.
Of the thousands of cases appealed the court, only about 130 cases per year are heard.
Carmen Bossenbrock remains hospitalized with a broken leg. She was briefly released to therapy but had to be returned due to complications. She would appreciate a card or letter. Send to her at P.O. Box 117, Dryden, WA 98821.
Members were reminded about the Rotary Potluck on August 9 at Sunrise Circle with the District Governor.
Women's Resource Center needs back-to-school items for those who use the service, especially fresh socks and underwear, male & female, young and old. There will be more later on this.
Committee signups were encouraged.
Laurel Turner spoke briefly about the results of the Friend-Raiser last Saturday, reporting a great success with hopes of doing it again next year. She encouraged all to complete the on-line feedback survey.
Next week we meet in the Grizzly Lounge upstairs for the club assembly.
Joe St. Jean read a thank-you note from Pastor Thom Nees, regarding our recent $1,000 gift to Serve Wenatchee Valley.
Barbara Walters was recognized for her new position.
Russ Speidel was recognized for recent publicity in the news media, so he was charged with a brag fee. Plus he turns age 70 on July 22!
[Note: Did you know that current birthdays are displayed on our website home page?]
Pete apologized for referring to ladies as 'gals', so to be fair, he will refer to men as dudes.

Last Thursday our Club joined with three other area Rotary clubs in the third of five 2nd Harvest Food Distributions to needy families. The 2nd Harvest visits were made possible from our area clubs jointly donating $3000, which was matched by District 5060 grant. Thanks goes to Dan Maher, Gary Provo, and Joe St.Jean for helping in this worthy cause that helps put Rotary’s name “out there.” The next 2nd Harvest Food distribution will be held on Friday, September 21 at Holy Apostles Church in East Wenatchee. Please consider helping and making this a Rotary priority of “service about self.” Stay tuned for more information as the date nears.
- Joe St.Jean
Our goal last Rotary year was $4,000, which was exceeded. The club has not yet set a donation goal for the coming year.
But we will continue to collect pocket change in the Club-60 cups on the tables each week. And as we continue our 10-year relationship with the Gates Foundation, since 2013, they have matched each dollar with $2 toward polio eradication.
Donations by club members on July 19 = $94.87 thus bringing our total $132, or $395 with the Gates match. This equates to 660 lives saved. Read about World Polio Day, October 24
