District Governor Visit
With Marjolein Lloyd
Kelowna Sunrise Rotary

This week we will hear from our amazing District Governor for 2023-24.  It is a great opportunity to invite guests to learn about Rotary's vision.  She is always informative, as well as entertaining!
Marjolein (pronounced mar-o-lane) joined Rotary in 2001 and was president of Westbank Rotary Club, District 5060 (2009-10).  She joined Kelowna Sunrise in 2017.
Born in Amersfoort, the Netherlands, Marjolein immigrated to Canada with her parents and three older brothers as a young toddler. Landing in Montreal, the family loaded into a motorhome and traveled across the country before settling in Maple Ridge, British Columbia…what better way to see the country?! She graduated from Pitt Meadows Secondary near the top of her class and then immediately pursued a degree at Simon Fraser University. But her life path quickly changed when she met a boy (who later became her husband)!

In 1998, Sean and Marjolein relocated to the Okanagan Valley and became franchisees for Little Caesars Pizza.
Last week - Mule Deer Habitat Project
With Susan Ballinger
Susan was introduced by her long-time friend Allan Galbraith, who related some interesting anecdotes about their times together.
Susan serves as CDLT Development Director. With her colleague CJ O’Reilly, she provided the CDLT’s mission and work and highlighted a few upcoming fall events open to everyone in our community.
She explained the need for the 8-year partnership between CDLT, our Club, and the WHS Interact Club to address the destruction of the critical habitat for wintering mule deer by the 2012 and 2015 wildfires in the north Wenatchee Foothills.  These large back-to-back wildfires destroyed the native shrubs that wintering mule deer need for food and cover. These flowering shrubs also support many pollinating insects, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Because these shrubs do not resprout after fire, the partners planted nursery-grown native shrubs and augmented these plantings annually on the Veteran’s Day school holiday. Pictures showed that this project, through laboring with shovels and wheelbarrows, has given students hands-on connections to our shared landscape and to each other, and that mentoring by Rotarians has been a key element to the success of this partnership.  Susan will conclude with a newly released map of how local deer depend on the Wenatchee Foothills.
On Nov. 10, 2023, we’ll be planting nursery-grown native grasses at the Kenzie’s Landing Trailhead- join us!  Here are some other events:

Susan provided many other useful links in response to our Q&A.
