As a biologist, naturalist, and educator, Susan Ballinger is respected for her depth of knowledge and ability to inspire. Raised in Montana, Susan developed a love of the outdoors that led to master's degrees in both Biology and Education and a career-long commitment to making science understandable to the non-scientist. Her passion for experiential learning is evident in decade-long work developing science field experiences for regional school districts. An energetic volunteer, she has served on the boards of the Washington Native Plant Society and Chelan-Douglas Land Trust (CDLT) and is a citizen science volunteer for botany and bird projects. Susan currently works as a Conservation Fellow CDLT.
Malachi Salcido was introduced by his mentor, Jay Smith, Malachi gave an impressive overview of his life and career. He joined this club in October 2022, sponsored by Bryan Campbell.
Malachi was born in Republic, WA, and raised in the Wenatchee Valley, working in cherry orchards from age 9. He attended Lewis & Clark school, graduated from Wenatchee High School in 1992 and married his college sweetheart Cathy in 1995. They have 4 children and a son-in-law. Their daughter Rianne was Apple Blossom Queen last year.
He recalled growing up with no plan for his life until a conversation he had with a work foreman at age 18 led him to attend WVC in the Refrigeration Technologies Program. He later graduated from Central Washington University where he earned degrees in Accounting and Finance. Malachi was voted the Wenatchee Valley College Distinguished Alumni of the Year 2018.
His company, The Salcido Connection, formed in 2001, is a full-service design-build contractor, specializing in HVAC and electrical systems. Services include a data space & cryptocurrency company and various real estate interests.
The Salcido family is very active in community support and ministry efforts locally and globally. Malachi serves as the President of the Board at both The River Academy and Sage Hills Church. Much of his success he attributes to his Christian faith.
The Board of Directors has approved applications for two potential members, Sean Fitzgerald, Wenatchee School District, proposed by PP Kory Kalahar, and Barbara Walters, NCW Libraries, proposed by PP Jill Leonard. You may submit feedback until October 10. This is the second listing.

Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) Recognition
TRF Chair, Frank Clifton, gave a trivia quiz* related to support of The Rotary Foundation (TRF) followed by another Paul Harris Fellow recognition presented to Ken Robertson, who became a PHF+2 as a result of taking advantage of bonus points offered by the club and some of our members. All members are encouraged to do the same by applying our current incentive plan.
Frank is also hoping we can become an EREY club this year. Every active member must donate a minimum of $25 to TRF Annual Fund. Hand a check to Frank or Do it here.
*Did you know we are the second-largest (of 57 active) clubs in District 5060, as shown here in the top 10? Let's demonstrate that with our TRF support!
