THE COMPASSION CURE, OR,
JOURNEY TO THE GOOD LIFE
With June Darling (Past president 2011-12)

Compassion is a powerful path to the good life both personally and collectively. The ancients knew this and science is re-discovering it. Through education and practice, we can overcome fears, ignorance, and distractions to reclaim compassion and enjoy its incredible benefits.
This presentation uses storytelling and science to explain what compassion is and isnt and its hidden blockers. Advice, in the form of three tips given to an aspiring minister and bartender, can cultivate and keep a wise, compassionate mindset.

LAST WEEK June 08, 2023
Field Trip

At RED APPLE FLYERS, East Wenatchee

Britt Dudek hit a home run with this fascinating visit to the home of the Red Apple Flyers, a hobby club for about 150 radio-controlled-aircraft enthusiasts, many of whom are actual pilots.  About 15 members of our club and a few guests, had several jaw-dropping experiences observing as these amazing aircraft displayed thrilling aerial maneuvers, many at very high speed.  The final demonstration was by an actual jet aircraft, a scale model of a 1950s-era fighter jet.  See short video linked here.
Thank you to Britt Dudek for providing an excellent BBQ lunch. (since Britt neglected to ask for donations; make sure gets yours).

VP Bobby Woods and Doug Stewart, a founding member, welcomed us and gave some highlights about the club and its history.   A surprising fun fact is that, even though in the proximity of the Pangborn Airport,  these planes are legally allowed to fly up to 2000 feet elevation under most conditions.  Also, visitors are welcome any time to come and observe the various events and competitions (honk horn if gate is closed).  Events are shown on their club website.
Surprising guests today were Thomas Everly's parents from Michigan.

IMAGINE ROTARY MOMENTS.
P/E Gary Provo presided in the absence of President Jill Leonard who became ill shortly after her return from the RI Convention in Australia.

Assistant Governor Shanley Crane made her farewell visit to our club and provided some amazing facts about our achievements this Rotary year.  Thanks in large part to the efforts of President Jill, we have achieved or exceeded ALL 24 of the the president's goals, including the highest level of donations to TRF in more than 5 years (290% of goal).  She further lauded :
  • Jill's efforts of working with the other area clubs to increase community impact
  • Carin Smith's continued tireless efforts on the Haiti Hanwash project
  • the club's time working the concessions at the TTC
  • support of many events at WVC, Youth Exchange, and our numerous scholarships
  • support of the plant based diet group
  • contributions to a great year for all Area-8 clubs
  • PP Mike Kintner for stepping up to take the AG assignment for the next 3 years
Finally, AG Shanley expressed high hopes for our upcoming year with Gary Provo as president, who is getting a big boost from all of the momentum created by President Jill's efforts.

INTERACT NEWS:  Award winners this week.

Sophia Kinninger
Service Above Self
Oscar Lavergne
Spirit of Rotary
Michael Whitefoot
Spirit of Rotary

Sophia Kinninger received the “Service Above Self” award, which means she showed exemplary efforts in serving our community via the Interact Club and the Rotary Club to benefit the community of Wenatchee. She truly embodied Rotary’s mission in all of her deeds and actions. She attended the Interact Club throughout all of her High School career, and served as President this year and Vice President last year. She volunteered for ALL of the activities and community service projects for the years she was in the Club. We selected her to receive the highest Rotary honor for her selfless service these past 4 years.

Michael Whitefoot received one of the “Spirit of Rotary” awards this year. This award is given to Interact Club members who are “exceptionally active in the Interact Club.” Michael attended every Interact Club meeting for at least 3 years and volunteered for every community service project and activity the Club participated in. He volunteered to serve as President, Vice President and Treasurer, and he frequently volunteered at the Town Toyota Center to earn money for the Interact Club’s many projects while also recruiting other Interact Club members to join with him. Furthermore, Michael was a member of 4 other service clubs at Wenatchee High School in which he also participated at high levels.

Oscar LaVergne also received a “Spirit of Rotary” award. He participated in the Interact Club for at least 3 years. Oscar volunteered to fulfill several different officer jobs in the club, including Vice President /Treasurer this year. He presided over several Interact Club meetings in the President's absence, doing a fabulous job! He volunteered for all of the Club’s outside activities and fundraisers, while attending college as a full time Running Start student. Oscar also took 2 additional music classes at the High School, while having a major starring role in all the high school musicals.

I feel that these three Interact students truly embody the core principles of Rotary, “Service Above Self,” and apply our motto to their daily lives, too. All of them adhere to the principles of the 4-Way Test and are very committed to be of service to their community. They are role models for us all.
