Pickleball in Wenatchee
What do you get when you cross, tennis, badminton, and ping pong?   It is the fast-growing sport called Pickleball. This game is for any skill level. There are several pickleball courts in the Wenatchee Valley including one at Rotary Park.   

Randy Smith has been playing pickleball for over 35 years and is currently an instructor at the WRAC.  

Make plans to attend and learn more about the game of pickleball.

Confluence Parkway Update
Laura Gloria, Executive Services Director for the City of Wenatchee, gave a comprehensive overview of the city's planning for a new road project known as the Wenatchee Confluence Parkway.   The project is utilizing a "Progressive Design-Build Delivery (PDB) method.  The goal is to develop and build the project with available funding and to meet the 2021 INFRA Grant schedule to obligate the grant funds.  It creates a new north/south route connection from the Maple Street/Miller Street intersection to the new roundabout at Easy Street/Hwy 2.
The budget is approx. $170M and scheduled to complete in 2028. Laura provided a 
 
 
    • Laura Gloria, City of Wenatchee, Executive Services Director. The Executive Services Director supports the Mayor and City Council through the implementation and oversight of executive level projects, programs and policy; represents the City on a variety of boards and committees; negotiates highly complex contracts, advises and consults with the Mayor on strategic issues; assists with decision making and provides leadership in problem-solving citywide issues; and  monitors public relations activities.
    • Bachelor’s in Business Administration, California State University Fresno 
    • Born in Mexico, raised in California (spent the longest time in Fresno, CA) and moved to Wenatchee in 2019 to be closer to family in WA state. I have three siblings and one nephew, one niece.
    • I’m a runner and since moving to WA, I’ve taken on trail running. I’ve ran over 15 half marathons, one marathon and two 50Ks so far. I also recently bought a house and I’m taking on a lot of DIY projects and enjoying the process of making it a home. I enjoy volunteering at the WV Humane Society and recently adopted a dog named Bernard.

Natalie Williams was presented a PHF+1 for her contributions to the Rotary International Foundation.

Frank Clifton, secretary and RI Foundation chair, presented an overview of The Rotary (International) Foundation (TRF) and the TRF committee goals for 2023-24.
 
Using a PowerPoint, Frank explained the critical importance of TRF to the success of Rotary’s efforts to “Do Good in the World” and highlighted how the Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) recognition provides further motivation for Rotarians to support the Foundation.  Continuing, this year, the committee will offer bonus points toward becoming a PHF as explained in the information sheet linked here:

Susan Albert, one of only two active Major Donors in the club, offered the use of her luxury lakefront condo in Kelowna (BC) 3 nights 4 days for the week of Sept 24- Oct 1, to be arranged with the winning bidder (TRF donation of $500 minimum).  Bids will be accepted at the next meeting.  A Major Donor is a person who has accumulated donations of $10K to the Foundation. 

The TRF committee has 3 major goals for the year.

   •Become an EREY* Club this year
   •Exceed President Gary’s giving goal of $8K by 50%
   •Minimum of 10 members move up one level in recognition
 

*EREY Club –

   •Each member giving $25 minimum.
   •Total club donation averages $100/member.

Funds donated to Rotary International are used for grants, fighting polio, and support of Rotary's seven areas of focus.

Celebrate Coyote's Corner-
The Wenatchee Valley Museum is hosting an event on August 4th to unveil the new Coyote's Corner.   The Rotary Clubs of the Wenatchee Valley all contributed to the upgrades.  This includes funds from a district grant.  All Rotarians are invited to attend.  

Appleseed changes-
As reported at the meeting, Secretary Frank Clifton has taken a step back in producing the weekly Appleseed.   Frank and Jill are sharing the task.   This team could use some help.   Do you like to take photos?  Maybe manage a calendar?    The Appleseed team is looking for others to take on SMALL tasks to help produce the newsletter.
