Skiing Uphill - A story of strength & Perseverance
With Pat Turner
On a snowy night in Wenatchee in December 1965, 17-year-old Pat West Turner’s life was turned upside down by a car crash that took her right leg. The loss changed the vector of her life but in ways that she believes made her a better human being and an inspiration to those around her. [Excerpted from Wenatchee World story in 2017...click the button below for the rest of the story]
Pat was raised in North Central Washington in the town of Entiat. Now she lives in East Wenatchee, Washington with her husband of forty years, Joe. She has been active at her local ski area, Mission Ridge, learning to three-track ski in 1966. Currently she facilitates a Writing for Clarity group. Her book tells her story. Learn more at the meeting!
Kirk was introduced by President Gary Provo who gave an overview of his impressive career with the PUD (see prior Appleseed).
Kirk sees the energy industry entering a major transformation as it moves toward clean/green production. And after years of debate, hydro-power is finally seen as a renewable resource.
Washington is leading the way with its Clean Energy Transformation Act, placing high demand on electric utilities as carbon-based energy is phased out. Currently the PUD has surplus energy, as demands increase due to expanded electric vehicles, data services and AI applications. Many applications are being received in Chelan and other PUDs for new power loads and from entrepreneurs with innovative new ways to produce and store energy.
The PUD is now using a Strategic Foresight Process based on 50-year planning rather than the typical 5-year process.
We can learn more about all of this in the upcoming Clean Energy Exposition here in Wenatchee December 14, hosted by our 3 counties.
Kirk praised those pioneers who foresaw these trends 50 years ago, when hydro power was introduced and expanded. He admitted that we need to be concerned about losing our current low power rates.
The Wenatchee Rotary Club became involved in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake, helping with water filters and with micro-loans to women starting home-based businesses.
Over time we realized that the water filters were short-term fixes and not sustainable over time. We learned of a group called Haiti Outreach that had been working on water systems in Haiti for over 30 years. In 2018, Wenatchee Rotary member Carin Smith entered into conversations with Neil Van Dine, a Rotarian, Haitian resident, and leader of Haiti Outreach, about how we might have a greater impact. Well-drilling has finally begun, and recently PDG Sherry Chamberlain visited the first drilling site. Click the image to see more photos and a brief video on our Facebook page, including some of Sherry's comments about her visit.

Concessions at Town Toyota Center
Want to have fun while earning money for our club? Want to show the power of Rotary with other Rotary members?
The Concessions at the Town Toyota Center is the place to be. You can spend the evening getting to know fellow Rotarians from other clubs and serve the community.
Show up and get ready to have fun! Even Frank Clifton has completed a shift and agrees that it was fun and rewarding.
Our club gets a portion of the net sales based on the number of club members served. In September we earned $350+. This was over 3 games. The money raised helps keep dues low, and fund community outreach grants and other club activities.
