Washington Tree Fruit Research/Extension Center
With Chad Kruger, Director
The Tree Fruit Research and Extension Center (TFREC or Center) was created over 80 years ago by the Washington State legislature. Although research on tree fruit production problems had been conducted by several researchers from Washington State College and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, no formal research facility existed during the early part of the century. In 1921, a group of growers in Wenatchee began a movement to obtain a tree fruit experiment station; in 1936, the Washington State Horticultural Association formed a committee to lobby the legislature for purchase of a research orchard.
Last week -
Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE)
With Annefleur Derksen and RYE Coordinator Brett Riley.

After saying a few words about the RYE program, Brett introduced our beloved student from The Netherlands with high praise, not only for her, but all the youth he has encountered in the program., stating that they give him hope for the future.  He also gave a brief bio of our next outbound student Benjamin Sagerser, a junior at WHS.

Annefleur (who speaks four languages) used an excellent and well-illustrated PowerPoint to illustrate her Exchange year thus far. Her outline covered the following major highlights.
  • The schedule of events leading to her selection, beginning June 2021, ending with a farewell party and training in July 2023.
  • Where she lives in Weirden (unlike Wenatchee, no mountains).
  • Her family, pictured below (two brothers Casper and Thijmen, mom Rachel & dad Michael).
  • Her best friends Amber, Juliette, Fleur & Roos.
  • The best day of her life, getting a pony for her 8th birthday.
  • Hobbies - horse-riding competitions ended with COVID.
  • Working at horse stables and other jobs since age 13.
  • Complex education system at her home very different from here.
  • Ambitious plans to study astro-physics and bio-medical engineering.
  • Fun in Wenatchee, lots of friends, school studies, wonderful host family, many experiences.
  • Her fundraiser - Oliebollen sale next week.
  • Things she looks forward to (e.g. tennis, graduation).
  • Hopes for things yet to do, e.g.
    • lots of skiing
    • big sports game
    • a fair
    • ice skating on a lake
    • Pacific Science Center
    • Space Needle
    • A theme park

Concessions at Town Toyota Center- WE NEED YOU!

Volunteers are needed on January 24 and 26, February 9 and 28.

Members who have not yet volunteered are in high demand!   This is a fun way to meet other Rotarians, share the love of Rotary with the community, and raise funds for our club and its impact on the community.  This helps keep our dues stable.

Grab a friend, spouse, or fellow Rotarian and sign up for a shift or three.

Our club receives a portion of the net sales for each shift you volunteer for. Thus far, our club has raised over $1,300 in just September and October of last year.

District Conference 2024
Make plans now to attend the next annual District Conference May 2-5 in beautiful Penticton, BC.  You will have the opportunity to hang out with fellow American and Canadian Rotarians, be inspired by compelling speakers, and participate in valuable breakout sessions, local tours, and a Bocce tournament!

Check out what other Rotarians are saying.

"Being in the same room as hundreds of other Rotarians is one of the most inspirational experiences you will ever have. You feel connected to not only neighboring club members but the entire world. It's truly something to experience and really opened my eyes to the amazing potential of our organization."- Michelle Shermer

The District Conference is your opportunity to see the vision of the district and the value of Rotary.  Got questions?  Ask AG Mike Kintner.
