With Ruben Mayes, Regional Partnerships and Philanthropy Officer covering most of the northwest, including Alaska. Following a glowing intro by Dr. Carin Smith, Rueben used a highly-professional PowerPoint to illustrate his discussion of the amazing work being done in the field of pediatric medicine, especially cancer treatment.
He began by relating the story of 'Harper', a little Yakima girl who was healed of an aggressive form of Leukemia via an amazing new cancer treatment called CAR T-Cell therapy, in clinical trials. This is his favorite of some 500 such on-going current trials.
Rueben also made mention of the fact that Seattle Children's is the largest such hospital in the nation in terms of geographical reach with 43 clinics in 4 states, including Wenatchee and Kennewick, and is the world's leader in novel approaches to pediatric cancer research.
He further discussed career pathways, access to care, the mobile Science Adventure Lab, and more.
We are especially honored to have Rueben as a member of this club.

Please join your Wenatchee Rotary Enviros installing a second Pollinator Garden in Wenatchee. Our first garden is at the Link Park-n-Ride Columbia Station, and we gathered volunteers from Sunrise and Confluence clubs as well as local environmentalists. The new garden will be in Olds Town closer to the Highway junction. Confluence club is leading this effort, and we will pool our lessons-learned from the first (smaller) garden. Please sign up for one or both work parties (Oct. 7 & 28) to prep the sight (thank goodness this one has irrigation already installed!), and plant the pollinator starts. Signup below.
Our member Lee Alley visited the site and states, "As a former beekeeper, I believe the site is entomologically very good, with access to clean, reliable water (Wenatchee & Columbia Rivers) 24/7/365. Even better that there are no close-by orchards (with Insecticides)." Yay! Please plan to bring work gloves, knee pads and a hat. This is a high-viz area, so please wear a 'Rotarians At Work' T-shirt if you have one.
This is our District Governors continuing focus, and a really big project. Many hands make light work, so please sign up for an hour or two of having fun while doing good. Thank you Wenatchee Rotarians for all you do in our community.
Elizabeth Jackson, Cascadia CD, will facilitate a forum for participants to ask questions about native gardening, review the benefits of native plant landscaping, share tips to manage/start a successful garden, troubleshoot with local gardeners, and connect with other native plant enthusiasts.
