WEEK IN REVIEW -  July 09 (ZOOM #16)
Part 1 - Program: CFNCW with Beth Stipe
Watch the ZOOM video HERE  [password - kory2020#2]
Listen to audio of the talk HERE.
Beth Stipe, club member and Executive Director of the Community Foundation of North Central Washington for 17 years, was introduced by Gil Sparks as an icon of the community, who has taken the CFNCW asset base to near $100M.
Her PowerPoint is shown below with some of her commentary.

Beth thanked us for our recent $1500 donation (which Allan allowed would soon become $3K) which will be doubled by Jeff Bezos.  Beth acknowledged that the COVID situation has severely impacted their activities, forcing a new strategic plan having two parallel tracks, one being a recovery program with goals as shown here.  Beth spent time explaining each point of the goals and gave many examples.

WEEK IN REVIEW - PART 2

   ANNOUNCEMENTS AND NEWS

See previous editions of the Appleseed for other important notes
  • President Kory Kalahar opened the ZOOM meeting to about 34 members with Thomas Everly as ZOOM host under Jill Leonard's account.  Raz always provides a flage for the pledge.
  • Linda Evans Parlette has experienced two major events in recent days.  Her mother passed away at age 94, and her son was married.
  • Challenge Scholarship Program.  Kory repeated this appeal to support Wenatchee Sunrise RC with their annual 'virtual' run/race to raise scholarship funds for at-risk kids on July 16.  Details and registration HERE.  See appeal from club president Earl Crowe below.  Several WestSide students have benefited from this in the past.
  • WOULD YOU RATHER?  A new club tradition, expressing member preferences on a current issue.  This week it appears the members prefer to go back to a previous time rather than pause at today.  See photo below showing about 25 members voting with their hands.
  • Ten things about Leonard Singhose.  See photo gallery below of this new tradition.  Leonard set a high bar for those to follow, especially for his choice for the next victim, the other Leonard - Jill.
  • STUFF THE BUS Thank-you note below.  Watch some Facebook video HERE
  • A hair style for Dom.  Since our club raised the greatest amount for "STUFF THE BUS", Dominick made good on his promise to get the haircut we chose at last week's meeting.  See photo below. Watch his video as part of our meeting linked above, or on his club Facebook page HERE.
  • Next week.  Congresswoman Kim Schrier (D-WA-08).
  • Appleseed format.  Secretary Frank says, "Please be patient with the format changes; I am still seeking the best look, and I may never find it."
  • Stupid Stuff Kory has done.  A new (and wildly popular) tradition for closing the meeting.  See latest fiasco below.

Challenge Scholarship Program - Message from Earl Crowe

"We believe that volunteering and providing humanitarian services is the best way to build goodwill and peace locally and globally. Registration fees help support our Challenge Scholarship Program, focusing on at-risk high school students. Our club, while working with school counselors, identify 10th grade students that are at risk of not graduation high school. After the selection process, up to 8 students are paired with mentors (club members) for a two-year period. During the two-year period, club members help keep the students on track to graduate, with the possibility of 2 students being awarded a $10,000 scholarship each to the college or trade school of their choice.

The Wenatchee Sunrise Rotary Club helps fund a number of local projects such as Rotary Park, and the Second Harvest Food Truck. Our club is also involved with hunger & disaster relief, Polio eradication, international student exchange programs, and numerous community projects."  Earl Crowe, President, Wenatchee Sunrise RC

   UPCOMING PROGRAMS

July 16  -  CONGRESSWOMAN KIM SCHRIER
On July 16, Congresswoman Kim Schrier (D-WA-08) will introduce herself, talk about her work in Congress, the committees on which she serves, and how her work relates to important issues in North Central Washington.  Subject to time limits and the interest of Rotarians, Congresswoman Schrier will also discuss COVID-19 and the continued Congressional response to it.  Rotarians will have ample time to ask questions on any topic, including but not limited to, PPP, federal resources for small businesses, and reopening the economy.  It will be a great day to be a Rotarian.

She represents Washington’s 8th Congressional District, which includes much of King, Pierce, Kittitas, and Chelan Counties, and portions of Douglas County.  Prior to being elected to Congress on November 6, 2018, Kim spent her career as a pediatrician in Issaquah, working with children across the Puget Sound region and helping families navigate the health care system. In Congress, Kim uses this expertise to inform her work on issues that improve the lives, health, and well-being of children.

  July 23  -  BETA HATCH
With Virginia Emery  -  Founder/CEO

In order to meet the $8B protein gap that’s expected by 2025, Beta Hatch is growing mealworms to feed the world’s farmed animals and fish, replacing protein and fat in these diets and producing quality organic fertilizer in a virtually zero waste system. Its proprietary process can use a huge range of inputs, including mycotoxin contaminated feedstocks that would otherwise go to landfill or be diluted in the supply chain. The Beta Hatch technology portfolio includes a combination of genetic technology, diets, processes and equipment and the company is currently building what will be the largest mealworm producing facility for animal feed in North America- right here in Cashmere!

 COVID STORIES
Hello members,

As a service club, we need to spotlight our service to the community and the world.  Can you please share with me what you are doing during this time to make a difference.  I know the majority of us are not just sitting at home watching Netflix 24/7.    Many of us are still working,  making masks, reaching out to people or supporting small business, etc.    Please send me an email at chaoscontrolmarketing@gmail.com with the details of how you and your family are engaged to make a difference in our pandemic world.  I would love concrete facts and photos speak volumes.  I will be sharing on our social media channels.  If you want to share what you are doing, but don’t want to be identified, just let me know!    Thank you for helping me show the world why today is a great day to be a Rotarian!

Thanks!
Jill Leonard
